I am currently an l4 sde at amazon with 1.5-2 yoe I have an sde ii offer at a decent sf start up that is doing remote first for ~280 tc, I am also doing team matching for google l3 which i think i can get up to 220-260 My manager at amzn said he’s targeting q3 or q4 for promo and has written a plan to close the remaining gaps. I think the l5 promo comp is around 250-260 right now. What do I do. My team at amazon is fine I’m just a little bored. Tc 155 #amazon #google #offer #decision
Id want to see the breakdown. But the G offer looks good.
Start up is 175 base 35 sign on 70 stock (monopoly money)
G
Gaps mean the promo won’t likely go through, if you move to Goog, it will be at least another year or 2 before promo, By then, you could have 4-5 YOE and still SE 1
Not super worried about it not going through, I’ve delivered a lot of projects successfully.
Also isnt this a pretty standard entrance into google?
Leave it, don't bring sentiments into a job, you will not be making anywhere close to what you will get now.
How stable is the startup in question
How can you determine the stability of a start up?
Simplest way is to ask them what their burn rate & runway is. More long-term, think about whether you believe their business model is durable and fills a genuine need
Everyone always promises promotions to keep you around as long as possible at the current number. They’re never guaranteed so I would not rely on it. Tell them you have an offer and see if they will make it immediate to keep you. That’s how you know whether they’re actually serious and consider you that valuable.
Quit and then boomerang Never trust a SDM who promises a promo. That's out of their hands. You will have too much work for no monetary benefit
Leave. Even if you get promoted you’ll be at the bottom of the band. Usually L4->L5 promos go really fast and less than 2 years. If your manager is telling you there are gaps then it’s not guaranteed to happen which could be ok if you don’t have external offers. Source: worked for Amazon for a while.
My org promotes pretty slow especially for new grads, but yeah that makes sense
