My manager and leads have told me a couple of times that my performance exceeds my level and I’m ready for the next level they just want to see continued consistency in order for me to get a promo, which each perf review I’m told will take another 6-12 months to likely happen. The same message sent to me last performance review also (6 months ago). I’m level 61 and think I should be at 63. I’ve been at 61 for 2 years and in industry for 8 years. It’s discouraging when I feel like I don’t know what else I can do to be noticed if I’m already performing beyond my level, for how long does the consistency ask make sense? And how do people fast track beyond senior if each level takes so long to solidify a promo? Thoughts? Am I expecting too much? What are other people’s stories? It makes me want to jump ship when I feel like compensation isn’t matching performance, any advice appreciated! #tech #promotion #microsoft #ms
I'd suggest switching teams asap. 8 YOE and L61 don't line up
But doesn't switching teams again reset the clock? How to know which teams will promote people fairly?
Those are my thoughts too, and Microsoft won’t hire you to a new level on another team is my understanding also, same as yours? In order to prevent poaching.
I am in the same boat with 8 yoe and 61 and above avg rewards for last 2 years :( my friends are at senior and even a couple of team mates have told me I should be trying for senior with the work I have been doing. But manager only gives vague answers for 62 promotion!
Sorry to hear! Lame! The vague answers are the worst feeling, that’s how it felt for me too. I asked my manager if him and other managers were using metrics I’m possibly not aware of (prs? Etc), anything that would be worthwhile to keep in mind but he repeated no and that “I’m ready, I just need to keep going (for another year),” basically. Then he referred to me as early in career, and I couldn’t help but think, I’m hardly early in career anymore at 8y. I think I’m perceived as young due to appearances which makes it harder for me to have other’s perception line up with my experience.
Exactly the same situation! Vague answers for me too. I know it's BS
VWYF.
I was L61 with 11 months of prior FT experience (it sucked though, a lot of expectations - competing with ppl 5-8 yrs of experience), eventually quite post ZR. Now eating bananas and caught up to above average SDE2. Your YOE and level don't line up. MSFT gives out 61 to SDE1s (60) with competing offers to justify higher base salary. It's a joke. (I wish I asked for higher RSUs instead of higher base)
Hey, if you’re still around I’d like to DM you. I’m in a similar situation.
I am in similar situation and would like to DM
My manager has put in requests for my promotion several times. Yet I have not been promoted though I continue to get the stretch projects with high visibility. What does it take to get promoted? I am not seeing it happen and wondering if the only way to get promoted at Microsoft is to leave for a competitor and try to come back in a few years at a different role?

You're being played. You can change jobs if you want to get to senior. Internal promotion at Microsoft has a timer. You cannot be promoted before you have been at a level for sometime.
