Joined Facebook as a new grad, and they require me to get promoted within 2 years. Curious what such requirements look like at other companies, if there are any?
That's crazy
Pretty much every big tech company have this policy, right? At least years ago, Microsoft had it too, make it to Senior or you are out. Although the time frame was longer.
59 to 60 used to be a year, no?
Can any FB guy chime in here? Is it that crazy?
Nope not crazy
Just quit Facebook at that time and get a 30-40 per cent hike at the next company. It’s the most fucked up company in corporate America.
If you fear that you might be the bottom 5% who are not promoted you shouldn’t join
That’s BS. The top performers generally have horrible imposter syndrome. Going to a top employer and fearing you could be bottom 5% is not unreasonable.
Don’t worry about their up or out policy, you’ll make it. Google has one too, but recently changed the terminal level from 5 to 4.
Did they make it harder to reach L5 as a result? Since it's no longer expected for everyone
No
The Big Four accounting firms have been doing this forever, it’s called Up Or Out. You’ll be fine.
The fact that you got hired in the first place means you have the chops, I would not worry and keep focused on your work there.
^^^^^^ Be proud of your achievement and focus on learning. You have onboarding for a reason. You’ll get to that level, or maybe you won’t and you’ll make a ton of money in the meantime and leverage experience into another job. Either way you’re doing great.
I wouldn’t worry about it. It’s not too hard to go e3 -> E4. Don’t kill yourself trying to get there would be my suggestion
It's pretty common across companies
FB is more aggressive in firing compared to other companies.
Yeah, Google is not aggressive, I know an L3 who's been at Google for 6 years and wasn't a new grad hire.

What do you mean 'require'?
In performance reviews at 2 years they'll just start comparing me against that next level, so if I'm not there yet at that time, it sounds like I'd get on a performance improvement plan / be let go, not sure...
