I have been at Amazon for around 1.5 years. My manager sees the timeline for my promotion in another 6months, even though I am already performing at the next level. I am confused on how much importance should promotion be given. Another path I can take to grow my career is switch companies. What do you think is the best way - stick it out or keep hopping?
I'd get the promotion and then seriously look around tbh. Can always interview to see what companies will offer you, but it's easier to go up a level once your current company advertises you as such.
Performing at the level is a requirement before getting promoted to the level, it is the norm.
Is your manager putting a promo document for you? L6 to L7 promotion requires 3 Directors to write positive recommendations for you. The promotion preparation and documentation alone takes 6 months. So if your manager is saying he will write you a promo doc in 6 months, keep in mind how long it takes for that doc to be submitted. Obviously, all of this hinges on your role and level at amazon. Good luck!
Most likely L4 to L5
Get that promotion and then switch. Promotion’s a signal to hiring managers that you are a good performer and you made some impact at Amazon.
