As a PhD new grad in hardware engineering, I would like to know the pros and cons in working at these companies below as the first job. I know they have very different TC, but maybe career and skills growth is more important as a new grad. Apple Nvidia Tesla Facebook reality lab Semiconductor tool provider: Lam research, Applied Materials, etc Semiconductor chip provider: micron, intel, TSMC, etc. Welcome to add on to these lists. Thank you in advance. #hardware #apple #nvidia #tesla #facebook #lam #Amat #micron #intel #tsmc
Get offers first then worry about it.
Haha, got several offers already
Show the tc. Then decide
Apple: good TC for hardware. No WLB. Equipment makers: 🥜 TC. Micromanagement and no WLB. Intel: Average to below average TC. Better WLB.
What area at Intel do you work in. I was in production and WLB was horrible.
As with any large company, WLB will vary by team.
For HWE - the only good options IMO are Apple, NVidia, Arm. From the software players G & FB will pay good. I would go to FB over G - look more serious on HW. Or if you want FPGA in HFT.
Why ARM? thought it pays 🥜
Does not pay as much as others but decent comapred to ALL HW I would say. The compensation structure is a bit complicated so if you look just at base - it is low, but other components add a lot. Also I included it if OP likes architecture - that is what Arm is actually about. No to mention Nvidia acq. If one can get Arm wlb with NV pay - it will be top choice.
Don't join Intel, no growth, no money, no wlb.
Finally someone I agree with. I don’t know which intel the others are talking about. You cannot get promoted because of the politics. People think it’s cool to just call you 7AM on your day off. No WLB and horrible management decisions. Leaving was the best thing I did.
Intel was always known for WLB. They don't stress about product launch or new features that need to meet deadline. Why do you say no WLB?
Apple/nvidia/ARM on another level here
AMD?
Ya
I’d look at Luminous Computing ;)
Can you give some details about Luminous ?
Nvidia will be good for career growth and have decent TC
Are you currently an intern at AMAT?
Was an intern there
Are you Mike?
Apple - Good pay, no WLB. Heard that some managers even ping on whatsapp late evening to give updates.
No true, this depends on org. I have great wlb, I work 9am-5pm then a couple more hours after family goes to bed.
I agree there is no WLB. But what Apple manager uses WhatsApp instead of iMessage? Haha
At Intel, your pay will be very less. Don’t take TC lightly even though you might be a new grad, slowly it gets to you. Also intel isn’t doing well. Most of the people at intel in the last 2-3 years have left to join apple. Pros: WLB. Very few teams at Intel work beyond 5 PM. You will have all the time to go all kinds of other things than accelerating your career.
Thank you for the comments.
Wait since when does Intel have good WLB? The WLB is horrible. People may leave before 5P but then take their work home. I left because of the extremely poor WLB and the politics.
