Pros and cons of reporting to a manager who is of same level as you?

Wanted to get some guidelines through your experiences. Ideally I like to report someone who is at least two levels above me for a longer runway for learning from may manager. The reason I ask is, in amazon, Facebook, Google and rest I noticed they are much flatter ....so is it fairly common to report to managers from same level?

You can also report to a manager who is lower level than you

In two words, it sucks

It's called a dead end. You can't get promoted.

Exactly. When your manager is 1 level up, it is also bad, good luck getting promoted.

This is entirely untrue. I know dev leads currently working to get their reports promos, where the report is the same or one level higher. Managers are rewarded for growing their reports.

I would say it depends I had a manager who was one level up and got me promoted. We were then at the same level and then he left. I would definitely go back to work with him.

Your manager will always be jealous of your comp and level, see you as a treat to his existence, hencr will undermine you as opportunity arises.

This is the difference between good and bad manager

Actually @zynga it would quite the opposite if the manager isn't the worst. Higher level ICs have the attention of the manager's manager. The best way for the manager to get promoted is to show he can effectively grow and retain high level ICs and so he has a lot to win in not undermining the career of his ICs.
