Pros and cons of telling amazon where I am going ?
Pros: None Cons: They could possibly walk you out that day instead of honoring your notice
That could be a pro
I don’t get this angst. As long as you’re not going to a competitor, do you really thing your fellow coworkers are that shitty, and have that much time, to try and derail your future?
If there's a stock vest on the line, it's not worth the risk.
I gave my two-week notice first and said I had a few options I was considering (mainly FANG), and then a week later told them where I was headed. Didn’t want to burn any bridges with my manager.
Going to a FAANG. I don’t think it is a competitor. So my question is: in case I am going to a non competitor, do I have to tell them ? Are there any other dimensions I should consider ?
No you don't have to tell them!!! People will ask out of curiosity, but you are in no way obligated to share this information.
Wtf? It wouldn't even have occurred to me to guard this information. Is it a surprise to Amazon that people come from and go to other FANGs? Are you supposed to pretend like you're a bashful virgin who's never been with another employer?
This is generally the case in cloud. Amazon/Oracle/Google/Microsoft will often walk you out when they find out you're going to a competitor. I don't know what specific rules there are around enforcing (is it just AWS to GCP, or company to company, etc.) But it's not just Amazon. If Facebook were to enter the cloud market, the same would likely be true if FB.
What’s the right amount of notice?
There are no pros. Don't do it.
