For those that are working in engineering @ Avalara. How’s your experience working there? How’s the politics if any? How’s the work life balance? What direction is engineering going there? Would you recommend working there?
Honestly depends on the team.
Very much depends on the team. The engineering senior leadership (VP and C leave) is absolutely terrible, incredibly incestuous and cliquey, but the director level or lower is hit or miss. Benefits are poor, but salary is competitive. Office is great, and culture is generally good. Engineering is probably the most dysfunctional org in the company.
WLB has been awful in my experience.
Engineering leadership is not strong technically and so they've been "kicking the can" on several key systems for years. Their processes also don't match the size of the org, they struggle with leading a distributed org, and they've been distracted by the Diversity agenda. Many of them came in through acquisitions and they just don't know what they're doing. Lots of false starts and making it up as they go.

Thinking of choosing a name Aria for my baby boy.
Good place. Decent WLB from what I’ve heard. But the pay is low TC wise. High base, low RSU.
