I don't 100% agree with Evan Shapiro - but HBU? see his latest LI post? >> YES YES - I know - "everything on LI is click-bait" blahblah - rather, I'm looking for thoughts that takes that out of consideration. [...] "Very Fried Just 180K Twitter users in the US have been dumb enough to buy Elon’s $8/mo #TwitterBlue snake oil. 290K worldwide. That’s 0.2% of all Twitter users. https://lnkd.in/eBwgp_3K At that rate it’ll only take lil’ lord Musk 1500 years to make back his $44 Billion. Based on that wild success, Mark Zuckerberg is joining Elon’s con. “Meta announced its own Twitter Blue-like subscription called #MetaVerified. Mark Zuckerberg took to his newly launched broadcast channel to share the news, saying the subscription service would give users a blue badge, additional protection and direct access to customer support.” https://lnkd.in/e2D27Phg I must admit: The vision of Zuck logging on to his “broadcast channel” in his footie PJs, from his reinforced bunker, to announce that the thing you all now get for free, will soon cost you $12 a month, made me laugh out loud. (Thanks for that Mark Zuckerberg.) Let me be clear… By the end of this decade, the #socialmedia we all know (and hate) WILL BE very different from what it is now. The core platforms of Web2 are crumbling. Because they have become little more than billboards that steal your privacy in exchange for a bile-based cocktail of bullshit and misinformation. Until now, these products have been free to use, because WE ARE THE PRODUCT. The platforms sell US to the lowest bidders. That era is coming to a close. Future social media will have entirely different economics, but they will NOT be the “blue tick” shell game subscriptions being hawked by the late-nite TV law firm of Zuck, Musk Cheetum & Howe. (Btw, a “blue tick” sounds like a great way to get Lime Disease). If you want to see the future model for social media, you do not need to try and imagine it. Just go to Fortnite, or Roblox, or Minecraft. Web 2.5 is happening. Right now. In many of YOUR homes. Your kids and friends are congregating on these platforms, and spending huge money, as THEY choose, to enhance their experiences. (How many of YOU currently get a lot of micro-charges on your credit cards each month for virtual cash and merch from these platforms?) Sure, these congregants are playing games. For a while. But with most sessions lasting 4-8 hours, they are also “hanging out,” socializing with friends and strangers. If that sounds like social media, that’s because it is. In a digital world where Disruption is the Operating System, Musk and Zuck are dinosaurs - looking older and more out of touch every day. The idea that the next generations of social media users will pay tolls to these old trolls to cross their corrupted, decrepit bridges, is simply and utterly hysterical. These used platform salesmen are trying to sell last year’s model to next year’s audience. Meanwhile, the cool kids have already moved on."
Zuck knows and that’s why he’s doing the metaverse thing. The problem is that it’s dogshit.
