Meta E6 offer.
I am talking to a recruiter at pure storage for a software eng position. I hear good things from my friends but wanted some internal perspective. Is there a wait duration before hiring or joining for backfill positions ? How is the work culture ? Any info you can share is helpful.
Why storage? Weka and Vast Data are catching up fast and they will either get acquired or be out of business.
Not true. Research more
This company is only good for the one who are from storage background otherwise they will extend your probation and kick you off. Do your research before joining. I have made a big mistake joining pure over other good offers.
its not about the location, its about the culture. As I said if you are already from storage background you can join otherwise I will suggest you not to join and go with others.
In teams I worked in, people who did not fit culturally (coasters, conflict seekers, etc.) got fired pretty quickly. I would imagine there is a lot of people unhappy with their Pure experience. Not everyone likes storage, and it’s not a good place for people not passionate enough.
Work is boring unless you love old storage stuff. Most techies dont care and its not good for the resume either. Plus, you dont learn anything valuable. When I joined, there was a blind post saying i warn you, dont join pure storage. The post is gone now, i guess they took it down. Anyway, I dismissed it & joined, and regret that i did not listen. This is a place for old boomers to rest and vest. Ppl dont leave cuz they cannot and/or there is a espp that locks at the low price (+rsu at $15 or so) But if you want to grow, this is not the place for you. Has no value in resume either. None of my engineering friends at google or apple heard of pure storage.
Yes I agree that some teams' work are a bit too low level so the skills are not very transferrable. But if you are not interested in those storage related work, there are still Java and Go teams either working on typical backend stuff or k8s.
thank you for insights. let me talk to recruiter and will update on what they say
Hey OP - overall culture is good and engineers are brilliant. Pay is good and stock is great. Limited opportunity to coast though. You do not need storage background as some others have pointed out. Hiring managers and recruiters know and respect Pure; ignore the people who are saying Google engineers don’t know Pure. Decide based on the type of work they’re hiring for and see if it aligns with your interests.
I joined recently. I like it so far.
Do they drug test? Avid pot smoker here
No they don’t.
I know a lot of people there. Best work culture around. I may be jaded because I currently work at a terrible culture, but only hear superb things about Pure. WLB, friendly people, most innovative in the storage industry. Don't know if they still do it, but every year they give out a spreadsheet of open positions and invite you to move because they want you to be excited and to grow within the company. Founder walks the halls so you can talk to him about anything. Despite employing quite a few people in Mountain View (or is it Santa Clara?), you rarely meet ex-Pure Storage employees because they don't leave.
Work culture can be pretty toxic in different orgs recently. They’re at risk of turning over too much with re-orgs that don’t need it and lowering morale so much that people leave now that the market is better. Innovators from outside data storage need to be listened to or it’s an echo chamber. Areas like Partner and Sales have good teams. Executive team needs to stop pretending people actually want to come into the office. They don’t. The execs are on the 6th floor away from the working stiffs anyway. The drive is bad and feels like you’re working in an random depressing place in the middle of nowhere that tries to look FUN, it’s an office park, and they could have saved money on a better, smaller office space. The food is also worse.
