Put on PIP while on H1B

Hi all, I'm very worried right now and need some advice. My manager told me earlier today that I was lacking in performance and needed to drastically improve over the coming sprints. From what I have read online, this means I am on the PIP program. I also know that someone gets the choice between a severance package or executing the plan. However, I did not get such an offer, which worries me as I do not even know if I am on a formal "PIP" yet or if this is just the precursor. I am on H1B (with a passport stamp) and I am very anxious about my options. I have been with my company for just over 1yr so am eligible for FMLA for up to 3 months. I also have around 10 days of vacation I can use if I need to. What is my best move here? Should I wait before receiving a formal severance offer or take FMLA/vacation right now? I currently have a vacation to Japan planned from Feb 22nd-Mar 15th next year, which I really don't want to cancel/postpone, so ideally would like my next job to start on March 19th, the Monday after I return. If I start looking for jobs now and get in the H1B transfer, is it feasible to start as late as March 19th or would I have to be employed sooner than that? If I take FMLA today, that will get me to at least early Feb + 60 days grace will take me to early April. Thanks!

No, you’re in Focus. If you don’t “dramatically improve”, you’ll get into Pivot, where you’ll choose between severance, appeal or PIP. Given the state of hiring, I would actually try to dramatically improve, and maybe take the PIP in case that wasn’t enough.

What sort of timeline should I expect before Pivot (assuming insufficient improvement)? I've read 1-2 months online, but they may be inaccurate/outdated

It all depends. If they can't hire any replacements, manager might wait to give it until hiring opens up.
