QA Non CS Background

Any insight on how hard it would be for someone with limited cs experience (some cs classes, no work experience) to land a QA role? In Seattle, if that matters.

I have seen people start off in support and transfer into QA. You might also be able to read some books or take a course or certification, and try to get a referral into an entry level position. I imagine you should be able to land a manual QA position with some networking and study.

Awesome, thanks. Yeah I need to look into manual roles, although I imagine the pay is probably quite bad.

What pay are you expecting? I would imagine you could land at least 60k if you really study and learn the job.

After a year of self- study (with a background in linguistics and teaching), I landed a manual QA role at 55k (in Seattle). Continued to study and after 2 years accepted an SDET role at 75k. Doing some contract work initially helped out- I spent 6mo working for UTest so I had some relevant experience on my resume. Other than that, network, network, network.

Hi, So you're saying you started as manual QA making 55k? That's pretty good. I've been doing manual QA for 6 years and am starting to learn web dev on my free time and would like to know roughly what to expect as i get more knowledge on the subject. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Same here started manual QA in 2013 and quickly moved towards automation. After 5 years of QA I am moving towards Android development. Started from 45k and currently at 125k in salary with no college degree or fancy certificate!
