As the communications technologies continue to improve along wirh AI, I can only imagine more jobs being outsourced. Innovation may stay in the US (unless China takes over) but the bulk of the work can be done for less costs overseas. No wonder Amazon's biggest development center is in India. It happened with manufacturing, why wouldn't it happen with software?
Because the US govt wanted manufacturing to be moved out for cheaper products.
Consumers love of low prices drove manufacturing moving off shore (not the govt). Not sure how this would work in software which seems like its driven by investors. Consumers decide which product to use. They don't care if it is offshored or not as long as the price is good.
Companies are incentivized to not offshore with tax benefits etc. Unless the US govt itself for some reason wants to outsource this industry to developing countries, it will never happen.

Last time I worked with a team based in India their work ended up costing an order of magnitude more despite being much cheaper per dev, and that was before the US based team had to redo everything anyway. Sample size of one experience on that but still.
Not familiar with how US corporation works? It means nothing if quality come down or the work has to be redone years later. The “leader” who made that decision has already shown a good boost on the financial statements and moved on to greener pasture. Look at Boeing, or mass layoff in tech. Aggressive cost cutting which boost short-termed quarterly statement is in vogue these days. It doesn’t matter that offshoring or AI replacing developers don’t work. As long as executives believe they can slash budget with them, they will be implemented.
This was a US corporation this happened at. They tried to cost cut but the results were so spectacularly bad even they couldn’t stick with it.
😂 its been three decades that India is supposed to kill software jobs. Turns out most of India top talent immigrate to America and Europe. Recently India salaries are catching up with Europe for faang. Factor that + the genAI wave and India is in for a lot of problems if they stay a software fdctory
We kitted ours out with nice offices and they all had Macbooks for the status despite most engineers preferring the Windows option generally. They couldn't deliver and were all laid off.

This won’t happen, GenAI will reduce the need for offshoring jobs and American companies will want to keep their American corporate employees.
AI will affect jobs worldwide. American companies will face stiffer competition (from Georgia political shifts taking place)and will outsource jobs at a more rapid pace.
It will affect jobs worldwide but differently. India is a software factory lot of talent leaves india and lot of dev staying in the country do low level dev work that could easily be replaced by genai dev tools or at least improve drastically efficiency of the average dev hence reducing the need to have a lot of them. It will be similar in europe and usa but at a much smaller scale.
What if war breaks out between the two as India start rise in power ranking? Or competition heats up and there’s more and more political disagreement?
Top rajesh will always try to go to US no matter the company that helps him to do so, top top talent in India doesn't last that long there, India's code in 90%+ of cases is full of convulated spaghetti mess which will hurt the company in the long run, just look at witch companies. I would be more scared of more centralized good average talent from other countries like latin america, even if salaries are not as low as India's on average people can expect good quality code from there just because of statistics and India having such a big population and, therefore, a more varied distribution of talent quality compared to latin america which also has better timezones as well.
See this is what sharing your knowledge freely gets you to. Do more free books, videos, courses etc. Knowledge workers willfully destroy their edge in the market by teaching others to replace them for free. If you know something only sell it to a buyer. Dont teach complicated things. Let low cost workers make mistakes.
