With all the cringe talk on LinkedIn, no one wants to address the elephant in the room: Incompetent management and leadership. There is almost no quality control when it comes to hiring them. I can talk about my experience: 1. Amazon: worked in the Alexa team. The VP’s career trajectory was senior Product Manager from a recruiter. Seriously, how they hell is that even possible??? Now she has moved to YouTube and probably ruining the culture there. The quality of work and that of people was poor for the most part in Alexa experience team she headed. 2. Roku: they literally hired a director of ML who doesn’t know the basics of ML. Did they not do a ML 101 interview for hiring him? 3. FireEye (now Trellix): The founder was great but he stepped down and hired a a**hat ceo with zero track record of success. Only record he had was selling the failed Mcafee to Intel. He got bunch of failed incompetent leaders and ruined the company while enriching their pockets. 4. Pip: an epidemic in the tech industry that targets ICs but conveniently spares executives and on rare occasions affects management. Have the right connections and you will. Most Amazon VPs and directors are not really technical. Just look up their LI. There has been some discussion in this on Blind too.

Are you referring to VP of Search and Recommendations who attacks pregnant women at ROKU ?
I am not aware of it. My interaction was mainly with the director. The fact is the folks leading search, recommendations, and content knows zero ML. They really need to hire a competent ML leader to head these ML heavy field.
So Roku is not a good place if you are in ML
It is hard to BS for IC interview. And it is very easy to BS for manager interview.
You can’t BS your way out of a ML fundamentals and advanced ML interview. Any leadership ML hire should be able to crack them.
At Alexa they can’t even write for loops. Lots of ex fire phone and cortana management trash
