I would like to here from anyone who is currently serving as an Oracle DBA or has been an Oracle DBA in the past. I am currently a Technical Support Engineer for the Oracle database. I'm trying to decide if I want to pursue the route of becoming an Oracle dba later on but I've heard a lot of bad things about the work-life balance of Oracle DBAs. I'd like to here from folks on what kind of quality of life you have experienced as an Oracle dba.
I'm not a DBA, but I guess this depends as much on the company as on the role?
Yeah. I've heard the work life balance can be good of you are a part of a sizable dba team because you do shift/in-call rotations and such. But for smaller teams (which I assume is the majority) it can suck bad. But that's just what I've heard.
I can tell you that working in Oracle support, there are lots and lots of completely incompetent and very lazy DBAs out there.

In Amazon we have tons of Oracle DBAs. We have oncall rotation in DBAs so the work life balance is good and more predictable.
It's a fairly stable team and I really like their Sr. Mgr.
