Question to Amazon Managers

I joined Amazon Seattle recently. I like the team. But I did not like Seattle. I see that there are many job openings posted in places like Dallas, Austin, Washington DC, New York etc.

How long do I need to wait to initiate internal transfer? Is it a good time to apply after my first anniversary at Amazon? or should I wait to finish 2 years at Amazon?

Any Amazon managers (and HR) here please share your thoughts. For instance, one approaches a hiring manager internally about a potential job opening within 1 year of joining at Amazon, do you feel comfortable hiring her? What do you look for in a person who wants to move to your team internally? Her Wiki contributions?

Long term Amazon manager here. I have no problem hiring someone after a year of experience due to geo change, but would expect a rational answer to what they’re going to get in a new geo that’s missing in Seattle. Would also want to speak to their current Manager, and see their 2018 Forte.

It’s the latter. I’ve been in three orgs and we had to hit a curve. I was often the most empathetic/best coach (though low bar) so often got tagged to add someone to PIP.

Total team size between 6-25 with lots of variation depending on org.

  • If you like your team see if you can just move to another location and work "remotely" while staying in the same team

Do you know you like one of the other locales? Most companies would make you pay for your own relocation in this situation. Not sure about Amazon. But figure out what you don't like about Seattle so you don't make the same mistake again.
