I'm trying to get additional information about 2 role types @ Amazon - Solution Architect Manager & Technical/Operations Manager but the information online is very slim and often drowned out by the IC version of the roles making it really hard to get information. Hoping to get some clarification on a few things from the blind community. When I look at open positions for Solutions Architect Manager they don't state how much of the position is spend doing SA IC work type work/meeting with clients vs developing/supporting the SAs that report to the manager. Some, not all, list ~30% travel, is that local visiting customers offices travel or overnight hotel trips travel? Is the difference between a Solutions Architect Manager and Sr. Solutions Architect Manager the difference between a level 6/7 respectively? Is the Sr. role managing managers? Would a SA-Manager interview be as technical as a SA interview or more manager style questions with a few technical questions? When I look at positions for Operation Manager it seems like it is a fairly straight forward management of operations support folks (teams around 20-30) with zero/no hands-on technical work, is that accurate? For a position like this how important would it be for my technical background to lineup with the team or is it more focused on team leadership and supporting the engineers to make sure they are successful? Example - I have 18 years of Windows experience, would that make it less likely I could get a Operations Manager positions for a EC2 Linux team for example but more likely for the Windows counter part? I have experience as both IC and people manager in enterprise/cloud architecture as well as systems/network engineering so I feel like both of those roles are easily within my wheelhouse. A Solutions Architect Manager role is more inline with my current and future career path however. Would one have better WLB than the other? Assuming they are both level 6 roles would they pay roughly the same? Would one have a better path for promotion? Would either one be more likely to be full time WFH? Any information would be great.
