RESUME CRITIQUE WANTED. REWARDS ↓

Recently, my department and I both had an unexpected layoff. Since that time, I've been trying to get a new job. For job-hunting tips, I've combed over thoughts on Blind, Reddit, and Levels. I dove into LinkedIn posts and YouTube videos. I've changed my resume several times, tried different formats, and spent money on JobScan, ResumeWorded, and Teal to make it ATS-friendly. Even though I've customized 60 resumes over the previous 40 days and used referrals from Blind, LinkedIn, and former coworkers, I've only ever been called once by a recruiter who found my profile on LinkedIn. I'm starting to think my resume might be the problem. I've tried many different things, but I'm still lost. I would greatly appreciate your opinions, criticisms, and suggestions regarding my resume (I've attached my master resume) and general job-hunting strategy. P.S. Rewards! Every piece of advice earns you some positive karma. In addition, my two kitties will be purring in appreciation! They're anticipating more goodies and toys after I get a new job, all because of your assistance. 🐱🐱 #marketing #marketingmanager #resume

I would keep the Skills before Experience (after the summary). Also I would not add a note about the company wide layoff

Thank you for your feedback. I decided to add it because of my short tenure.

Your resume could be trimmed down to 1 page. I would 1) drop the layoff note. 2) drop volunteer items 3) reconsider the bullets on page one. Seems excessive. I like to keep to 4/5 bullets on last job. And maybe 3/4 on job before. No one is really considering too much what you did before 2017. Right now it’s a lot of words and feels a bit unfocused. Especially since you have teal, it’s easy to add or omit bullets from each resume version. That’s what I have done. If it’s an events heavy job then I go highlight the events and coordination. If it’s marketing strategy, I highlight those. Unless you’re trying for a startup job where they want you to wear 10 hats, try a few more focused resumes and see if you get better call back rate. University info also looks like that 2 lines should fit on 1 bullet. Lastly, I’ve noticed that my response rate is much higher (10% vs 40%) when I apply for very relevant and category specific roles to my last job. Good luck! 🐈

Thank you so much! As I mentioned, this is a master resume. I tailor this version for each role, aiming to keep it within one page. My last two positions were with startups of about 200 people, where I often wore multiple hats... Now, I’m looking to work on larger budgets and global projects/products with a narrow specialization, so I typically apply to tech companies with at least 1,000+ employees. Maybe that's why they reject me.

No filter: the resume reads a little bullshitty. I don’t doubt any of your experience but the professional summary contains a lot of name dropping. If I were a recruiter and scanning your summary for 5 seconds, what should I take away? I took away that you dabbled in a lot of things. For experience section consider impact-what-how instead of what-how-impact; it’s a lot of words to read through to get to your impact. Looks like really good experience wishing you the best!

Agree! I will incorporate an impact-what-how structure and make it more concise. Thank you!

Similar comments to the above. I read your resume for a min, still didn’t capture much highlights besides knowing you are working with events marketing and social media. I don’t remember any notable projects you mentioned Bullet points can be more concise, eyebcatchjng, and memorable, relatable to the job

I appreciate your input very much. This is the sum of my experiences. I attempted to compose it such that it would be remarkable and memorable, but it appears that you are correct and that the issue is present. What do you mean when you say that you don’t remember any notable projects? Do you maybe have a nice resume example or template that I could use/follow?

I meant after scanning your resume nothing sticks in my head, like, oh this person had done XYZ project, Im interested to talk to him about his experience The most simplex yet effective template for bullet point is: action verb + project + result Can highlight project in bold so it’s eye catching

The social metrics - I’d use growth % on views and followers, 200k views on YouTube and 100k IG followers isn’t amazing, growth % could work more in your favor
