https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2024/03/18/apple-in-talks-to-license-googles-gemini-for-generative-ai-bloomberg.html Apple went through an AI-startup acquiring spree and still fails to deliver on an LLM-driven assistant. If this rumor is true and they are leaning on Google’s Gemini to be the backbone of Assistant, Apple is truly screwed. Especially after closing out their auto department. Big loss for Apple. Sad. 🍎 #apple #google #llm
If I was Apple, I would be focusing on a suite of “small” language models that could run locally on Apple devices. I wouldn’t be surprised if that is their end goal and Gemini is just a bridge to cover them until they get there.
We can do that for them as well. Gemini Nano already runs on device for Pixel and Samsung
Until you realize most LLMs can be run on Apple silicon with fractional power consumption
That unified memory architecture is just pure luck

Yea they can all be run fine on apple silicon. Some of my benchmark performance has shown they run faster on some newer Macs than nvidia devices. iPhone already runs models faster than any smartphone
interesting. looking forward to see how 16pm will do. rumor says it has big improvements but i need to upgrade my phone by that time anyways
Apple virtually controls North American cell phone market. It is a dominant force in cell phone markets globally and has a very strong brand perception and pull. Apple will be fine just not belong to the Trillion dollar fine. Maybe in the same line as Samsung.
It’s only RIP Apple when Google inevitably cancels Gemini and we have to migrate to a different provider.
Apple is fine relax. The way I see this Gemini contract is most likely a stop gap until Apple builds up their own LLM expertise. Also always relying on Gemini is a single point of failure. Apple is smart enough to know that and at this stage Apple is too big to disappear into oblivion like y’all say. Only thing Apple needs is to sustain demand for their products. I don’t see the crowds slowing down in any Apple Store anytime I pass by one. Emerging economies like India are starting to buy more Apple products .. just long Apple and chill
Apple hasn’t released anything, but you already bury them. They are doing well with distributing risks between multiple buckets. Gemini as a backup plan is good enough idea Also I remind https://appleinsider.com/articles/23/12/24/apples-ferret-is-a-new-open-source-machine-learning-model
