This is the first time I have received RSUs, and it was supposed to be 185 units vested. However, when I checked the etrade portal, I saw that only 88 units have vested. What could be the reason behind this? Has VMware deducted some RSUs? I am based in Ireland. thanks in advance
Taxes? That’s what happens in US
I am completely novice on RSUs. Is tax deducted before selling the stocks? Have to pay tax again after selling it?
Your tax is like cash income. Some of your taxes are sold at the day of vest to pay the tax on the total RSUs vested
You either have money in your broker account to pay the RSU tax and instruct them to do it or they sell 51% of your taxes to cover for it on your behalf
Sounds about right - you got 48% of the total stocks that you were entitled to, which is approximately 88.
RSUs in Ireland are taxed at 52%. 185*(1-0.52) = 88.8, fractions are rounded up => 88. On top of that if you ever sell those 88 you will need to pay additional 33% on the profit made due to Capital gains tax(CGT). Welcome to Ireland.
Vesting is considered a taxable event in Ireland and hence why you received what you received. As for tax when selling, you may or may not need to pay taxes, consult a knowledgeable tax advisor and meanwhile read about the topic of Remittance Based Taxation in Ireland. This is not a tax advice.

Yes, sell to cover. No one here can answer the second question. Talk to a tax professional.
