Pfizer stock unchanged since March. Why?

We see tech stocks jump all the time. Why is Pfizer's stock basically unchanged since before the pandemic until now, even though they are the only approved vaccine, and practically every country and sports organization is begging for it?

Google bbtvoi Dec 13, 2020

Because Pfizer sucks.

Moderna stock jumped a lot

Kaspersky corrona Dec 13, 2020

If you remember, vaccine was approved by FDA on Friday night after markets were closed. And after hours trading shows some trend to grow. Probably that’s why

Other biotech stocks jumped at announcement of phase 1 success

Kaspersky corrona Dec 13, 2020

Pfizer is up 15% this month, so it jumped on the news too. Now Moderna is up by 86%, but that just mean more people speculate with Moderna stock. Pfizer has been on the market for a while, and I suspect a lot of it is in long-term investments of pension funds and etc. So maybe just amount of stock at the market is not enough to spike speculative activity.

Nothing had changed

Because ceo dumped most of his stocks on the day when trial results were announced. Clearly he doesn’t have high hopes about the stock price himself.

Kaspersky corrona Dec 13, 2020

His transaction was scheduled 3 months in advance. I suspect he pushed everyone to achieve specific date, but he didn’t dump it the minute results were announced. Moderna CEO has also made quite a lot on trading his stock this year.

Yeah but 62%?!!

It's huge company this doesn't move the needle much for them

Kaspersky corrona Dec 13, 2020

I thought so too, but potential $14B they make on vaccine in 2021 is equal to 27% of their revenue in 2020, and with the substantial sales decrease of Upjohn product, vaccine can make up to 30-32% of their revenue. Not a 🤧

Google wFatDuck2 Dec 13, 2020

That sounds higher than what I'd read. The 100million doses were sold to us government for ~2 billion. Even if their sales gross 14 billion it's a one time thing over 1-2 years. Maybe that's why no huge spike. Their profit margin is I assume not huge either

Gotta look at Biontech instead. They developed the Pfizer vaccine. Pfizer just uses the Biontech vaccine.

Kaspersky corrona Dec 13, 2020

It’s not entirely right. Without Pfizer production expertise Biontech wouldn’t be able to develop sustainable vaccine. Now vaccine that needs to be stored at minus 70 degrees is questionable for me at the matter of sustainability, though. Moderna vaccine is less demanding, so when it gets approved it’d be more popular than Pfizer’s one, but it’s still a question how much and how fast Moderna can produce

Not true. The vaccine was already ready when Pfizer asked Biontech to work with them.

Google millionire Dec 13, 2020

It's a mega cap. For example apple doesn't move a lot just because they release a new phone

Kaspersky corrona Dec 13, 2020

Also, I wouldn’t call a change from 28 in March to 41 in December “basically unchanged”
