Working in Amazon as a L5 BIE. TLDR - What's a good career path for a BIE? DE or DS or TPM given that they have an year to prepare for these roles ? Have never worked in a SWE type role before but did manage a small BI team before joining Amazon as an IC. BIE is a dead end role at Amazon or anywhere else for that matter. I am planning to make a switch by 2022 Summer and want to switch to a different career track and prepare for it thru this year. I have three options - get into DE and get more technical with back end systems. Or manage some wide scale projects (mostly BI projects because of my team) as a TPM and learn more about SDE concepts during my own time so that I can be better TPM for a wide range of projects and not just BI projects. Another long shot is to switch to DS track within Amazon as I have done some DS work in the past as well and do have some experience with it although it was at a small company. There is some significant learning and time investment needed from me for all three options and I am not sure which one to pick for a better career progression. I don't see many DE tracks in FAANGs apart from Fb and Amazon so my options would be pretty limited when I want to make a move. And I would have to learn a lot about DE tech as well. I will have to take on some DE projects within my team to prove my worth as a DE to my manager so that he can change my title. TPM is a more common across all tech companies so I don't see any problem with opportunities with this track. The plan to ramp up for this role is to learn the basics of Algo and DS for 3-4 months, focus on System design and project planning for next 5-6 months before I start applying. My people skills are a bit weak so I will have to work on improving it during my day job by volunteering for taking on some ambiguous projects. I am not quite sure on the DS track as it might be harder to make a switch given the less roles and higher competition from PHDs across the industry. My stats are better than most BIEs and DEs but definitely not on par with other DS (not yet , at least) What would be my best bet for a long term career option in FAANG ? After Amazon I want to prefer companies with good WLB. YOE - 7 years (did random things for first 4, 3 as a BIE in a different company) TC - 160K #engineering #software #tpm #dataanalytics

I think the most natural progression from a BIE role is towards product management. Like you mentioned a BIE role is mostly a dead end, however it does give you an option to get involved with the business. It's up to you how much of that you want your role to be. I know BIEs who have successfully moved to a product management role.
Just to clarify , are you mentioning about people who went from BIE to PM or TPM ?
Product management (PM) not TPM(technical program manager)
