Help me settle a debate. My wife and I moved to Austin from Fremont 6 months ago. I am not sure, but most of my interactions result in white people asking me “Where I am from.” This does NOT happen with non-white people. Basically, every time a contractor comes, or I check out in grocery stores, they look at me and ask where I am from. When I tell them California, they follow up with “but ethnically where are you from?” I don’t want to tell them India, because I am afraid they will do something to me. I am kind of offended because this almost never happened in Bay Area. My wife chided me saying I have inferiority complex and people just wanna be friendly. But I dunno, it gets to me here. What does everyone think? TC: 280k #austin #fremont #racism
That's the price you pay for moving to Texas lol. Austin is probably the most liberal part of Texas as well
Could go either way, depends on their tone of voice or body language. Could be a friendly question or alienating
I am from asia, but from this survey, I can see that whites are not treated fairly. It’s so normal to ask someone where is he from, especially when he has an Indian accent.
I’m experiencing the same thing in a white dominated neighborhood. But mostly asked such by senior people. Maybe it’s just a generation difference (they didn’t see as many immigrants as people do nowadays.) One day I was asked by a veteran who was involved in the Vietnam War asking me the question. I was hesitated to answer but still answered. Then he said hello in my home town language and told me he learned many other words. Overall I don’t feel discriminated after answering the “originally coming from” question. That’s my understanding.
Hmm it must be weird as a Vietnamese talking to a US veteran, no?
You know to be honest if anyone is showing negativity towards you it’s probably because they hate you because you’re from California and not for any other reason.
Its not racism, they're just curious where you are from, people here love to embrace their culture - native Americans, African roots, etc. I've had so many fun conversations with people like that. They're just wanting to know more about your culture.
Teach them how vaccines actually good for them. We have a good culture around it. We should inform them so that they can embrace the wisdom.
Tbh, I am in a red state and like 90% people I came across are vaccinated, surprisingly and also use masks.
I am an Indian so I am not being racist when I say this - if you were born here and sound like you were from here, then you should definitely feel offended. Else you should not be. I ask white folks from England, Scotland, the Nordic countries where they are from. Why not..

My dad was entering the state capitol at Austin and a white Sherif asked him where he is from. My dad replied that he is Palestinian with a very thick Arabic accent. The officer said welcome to Texas and shook his hand. Made my dad’s day. I wouldn’t say it’s racism
how do you know he didn’t follow your dad inside the capitol?
@Facebook If you are going to try to conjure up racism where there is none, you will always feel discriminated against.
This happens to me in the bay area all the time!! And honestly it happens more overtly with Indians. Almost always the first question other Indians ask me in fact. Again could just be friendly, but I feel judged by it
I ask people where they're from and I'm not even American
Omg ur so racist /s
They just wanna figure out what kinda immigrant or what gen immigrant you are. Dealt with lot of this stupidity in red states and haven't been asked such stupid questions in a while. Never going back to a red state. Most are harmless but probably would punch air if they learnt how much you make
Or they just want to have a conversation?
maybe, but they haven't been my experience. didn't fully understood racism until I learnt how my white friends would be treated and how I would be at some places.

What happens when most of your team is Indian?
Yeah that’s how white Republicans act. They don’t actually care about where you’re from by the way, the point is to make you uncomfortable and alienate you.
Should I move back to the Bay? Should I be afraid for my safety?
They just want to make you feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. Don’t let them. Instead have lots of kids and ethnically replace them. Tell them you’ve come from Uttar Pradesh and came to facilitate the “Great Replacement” or whatever.
