I've been working in my current role since January of 2022. During that time I've been shuffled around the company throughout the last two years moving from a Senior Product Designer to somewhere between a Senior and Lead Product Designer (I'm the solo designer on my team actively pioneering new projects and have shifted to owning an entire domain). In mid 2022 I was given a $5/hr ($10,000) / year raise which moved my TC from $115,000 to $124,500. The company I work (Fortune 5) for does not give bonuses so this is all the extra money I've seen over the last two years. I'm in discussion for a raise which will be approved but I'm not sure what to ask for given the volatility of the market last year. I've spoken to a friend of mine who works in a similar field and they mentioned they got the following raises over the last year totaling 18%: - 4.5% raise for inflation in 2021 - 10% raise for a promotion - 4.5% raise this year Prior to research, my target salary was $150,000. However, after looking at Glassdoor, Salary.com, Indeed and the like, this number seems to be on the low end especially as a solo designer bridging two positions. Last year when asking around, a few people in my position made $150,000+ but they've gotten raises since which also impacts my thoughts on the final number. A few questions: - What sites are you using to determine salary and raises? - What is your / your peer's total comp? - Should I consider inflation in this ask? - Should I be asking for more? Any insights are helpful! #tech #salary #design #ui/ux #fortune500 #fortune5
depending where you are it should be 160K ~ 200K base in SF/NYC I use these two: levels fyi blind TC (surprisingly good) TC: 230K
So the challenge here is that you’re definitely underpaid, but there’s also a slim to zero chance you’re gonna get a 30k+ raise. I might start with a more general conversation with your manager about your current role and compensation and ask about salary bands for your new role.
This is a super solid idea. I’ll be doing this and then assessing and moving forward. Thanks for your insight
Glad to, good luck!
The short answer is you won’t get any substantial raises without jumping ship. As for a raise that the company would feel comfortable with, 10% is doable if you can present how you’re outperforming your current role and the impact you’re making. 150-180 is a good target that can be found at the majority of even startups. Big tech companies is what you should be aiming for if a jump in TC is your main goal, senior to staff level 250+ is possible at plenty of places. Levels.fyi is your best source because apps like Glassdoor aren’t accurate for tech.
Yeah, I have 6 yoe as a senior designer and I make 350k in Seattle. You are def lowballed
You’re definitely not the norm.
7 YOE here and $350K in Seattle. It’s not outlandish.
Where are you located?
Located in the Midwest, moving back to LA
Ask for more then. That’s HCOL.
