I went to an Ivy League school and I studied like crazy when I was in high school. I was taught studying was the easiest and surest way to a success Then I got into tech, and am working with people from state schools making the same money. People on Blind say Leetcode is more valuable than universities. To be frank, Leetcode is extremely easy compared to the rigorous curriculum I went through. I think I can solve every single one if I prepare for a year. So it looks to me that LC > universities. I do have a couple friends doing YouTube videos, both of whom are making more than myself if counting for sponsorship. So it feels like being a streamer/influencer is better than being a SWE. I also feel like being an influencer is easy if you are willing to spend 10+ years making contents like how I did for studying. Now it all feels in vain. I have 2 kids and am thinking of not sending them to schools and just thinking of raising them to focus on whatever the internet is focusing on. Whether it be making TikTok videos or being a YouTuber. If next hot thing comes along (maybe vr/ar), do that instead Am I a bad parent to think that TikTok videos are more worthwhile than a degree from MIT or Harvard
College is becoming less important. Educate your kids on finance and also make sure from day 1 you open a custodial stock account for them. That way when they are adults they can do and be whatever they really dream of being, instead of what will make them the most money
You are correct, school is overrated
This is a terrible idea It also wouldn’t be a bad idea to move to an area with better schools, specifically public schools.
Don’t be ridiculous. They can do anything after school. You can start making tiktoks today if you want.
There's also always OF
Bruh, let them go to school, socialise, have some good life and make moments in this young age. Don’t run for money and ruin their life. They have long way to go unlike you elders.
I think you need a middle road here. Focusing too much on education / degrees can be detrimental and focusing too much on TikTok or whatever the next platform you can monetize on is also not good. Education is extremely important and I would focus on it but not to the detriment of mental health, everything has its place and you don’t want your kid to be bitter about how they had to perform academically but rather understand that I was important and responsible to dedicate serious effort to education but it’s not the end all.
Higher education is not solely something to do for a good career. There is inherit value to expanding your knowledge and way of thinking about things. I studied engineering (bs+ms) and it’s shaped how I viewed the world in addition to helping me get a (completely unrelated to my degree) tech job. Although it’s easier for me to say that since where I’m from universities aren’t insanely expensive like here in the states. If you have a massive student loan to pay off at the end of your studies, then it’s a way more transactional thing. Also for every successful influencer/streamer there’s probably 100k unsuccessful ones
There are perfectly good state schools with rigorous CS programs. There's a wide space between "it's not worth making academics the number one priority for my children and pressuring my kids to go to any ivy league" vs "school doesn't matter, my kid can be a YouTuber." Honestly, you sound like a child. The only thing in your post making me think ivy league education isn't worth it is the idea that someone who's got it wrote this post. Of that I'm also skeptical. Ivy league usually makes it easier to get into the best companies early in your career, since they recruit directly on campus. Top schools also put you in a network where your classmates are wealthy. A higher percentage of them get to places you want to go, and so you end up having personal references. School is also fun, and you learn things other than CS there that set you up for your future career and life. And if you're so successful, you can afford to offer it to them, right?
Amen!!
Another thing -- the people you refer to that went to state schools but still earn as much as you, they still had to learn to work hard. On average, they had less money as kids. Less tutors. Less after school programs or travel or summer camps or music lessons. They usually had jobs. I sure did. I had a friend growing up who, when he was quite young, spent every day when not in school collecting empty bottles to bring to the recycling center for money so his mom could buy food. He had a job at 12 and two jobs by 15. His mom died when he was 16. He went to a state school and eventually became a doctor. You were able to "study like crazy in high-school." You had an opportunity that set you ahead of people like him. Your children have that opportunity too, and you're contemplating whether you should tell them to squander it. Hand them ipads and forfeit your role as a parent because you resent other people's success? If you raise your kid with an attitude of "nothing matters. Making a living is as easy as going on social media and making funny videos. Even those dumb state school kids get into fang"... you're not teaching him the work ethic that would be required even merely to make good YouTube videos. Most of the people I grew up with considered themselves fortunate to become carpenters or plumbers or whatever. Getting into a good union can be hard without connections. And too many people I went to school with are dead now. Take all the opportunities life gives you.

Home School is the way to go
I think home schooling may be great but may also end up being neither of both and be the worst possible outcome
I just don't like how my kids public school has a litter box for those poor souls who identify as cats. I'm not exaggerating
