I made this choice a few years back and chose Raleigh. Weather is nicer, schools are fairly good (but not if your child has special needs of any kind), and local job market is still growing quickly. We have a bunch of biotech and other things driven by the confluence of 3 big universities that makes the growth here pretty diversified vs other regions. Lots of nature and trees still around despite the development, as well as lakes. The area is also surrounded by cool places to go. 2-3 hours to the ocean, the mountains, swamps, etc. Were I to choose again I think I'd make the same call, though knowing now that I have a special needs child I probably would've picked neither city and instead a state with better programs.
Thank you so much for the insights :) I don’t want to bias the poll with my preference, but I agree with everything you said. I chose these 2 because that’s where the lions share of hardware companies are outside of the Bay Area.
Sure, let me know if you have any specific questions.
You are comparing city (Austin) to a town (Raleigh)
Yes and I’m ok with that. I’ve already listed what I care about in the poll options :)
