What would you prefer for a new grad position, Raytheon Software Engineer or IBM backend developer. Tc will prob be similar but if it was the same which one would you consider a better opportunity? Raytheon TC 95k IBM TC tbd #tech #softwaredeveloper #softwareengineer
Raytheon! They are in the early innings of a golden era of weapons makers where military budgets are soaring globally. Tons of job security + upside with stock and I assume way lower stress than IBM. Both good companies, but I think even if Raytheon comp is a bit lower it’s worth it.
Personally, I would opt for IBM unless you want to get into federal contracting.
Raytheon has a considerable amount of non military commercial work.
IBM and leet for when market improves
Depends on the role. If the raytheon position comes with ts/sci, I suggest taking raytheon and leaving defense after a year or two. You can take the security clearance to big tech and have less competition in the hiring process.
Just for the OP if you go down this route, just know you’ll be locked in a secure room without your phone and severe security restrictions placed on you. You can also never wfh. There’s no additional compensation for this restriction.
Unless your GBS at IBM, expect to get laid off in due time. Laying people off by tens of thousands is like a passion of theirs. It was great for my resume out of college though. Running into former IBMers is nice too.
Yeah, that has happened a lot. A little less so the past two years probably because attrition has been so high.
RTX is having an internal merger now and salaries aren’t that great
$95k for a new grad is pretty solid tho
Don't join gbs at ibm. Lot of politics.
Def ibm
It really depends on your values. Tech companies like IBM will get you the money but Defense will always give you the (job) security. Big Tech tends to pay much better but the caveat is having a greater likelihood of being laid off, Especially in times like this. Look at where the economy is heading and pay attention to what big tech is doing within their workforce. Since you are starting out in your career, I would personally stick with the defense for a couple years, get your skills and clearance built, then move on to other opportunities. You will be very marketable in various sectors. 95k is really good starting out.
Disagree, unless there are some big things missing you should take more risk when you are young and have less responsibilities. Defence is always hiring, go for the startup/big tech now
In addition anecdotally no one I know at Northrup or Boeing do any work, you will probably not learn much as a SWE there that will prepare you for most jobs (API dev, cloud infra, distributed systems, front end, etc) outside
Raytheon is pretty good
