How does Google make the worst acquisitions ever?

Do you guys remember FitBit? Everyone made fun of them for it even at the time. Why didn’t they acquire something meaningful like Garmin and/or Strava? Ridiculous

You remember YouTube ?

Yeah how many years has that been?

Companies acquire for IP not their current products !

Google Wnqq00 Apr 26, 2023

Did they acquire Fitbit to merge it with their ecosystem for the pixel watch (and acquire necessary IP) or is it just for running it into the ground?

They need Eric Schmidt back as CEO

Isn’t fitbit dead?

Attentive tristate23 Apr 27, 2023

I use mine. Best battery life of all trackers out there. I only care about my fitness and sleep metrics so it’s perfect .

Google Wnqq00 Apr 27, 2023

You haven't used Garmin then. I just switched, and it's night and day (at 3-5x the price, admittedly)

Google has no need for Fitbit as a standalone brand. They needed Fitbit tech to accelerate their hardware ecosystem. Apple is gaining share and Samsung losing share in high end devices (where most ad revenue comes from). My read is that google is upping its investments in self branded devices unit as a defense. For this, they need to build device-tech, manufacturing and retail muscles. They do not need standalone, failing brand. Fitbit brand was dead as a dodo pre acquisition

Google hardware is a dead end. They can’t keep up with the mighty Apple ecosystem. I went from a Pixel fan to an Apple user.

Google Wnqq00 Apr 26, 2023

Honestly, how? iOS and macOs are both rage inducing to me in their complete lack of flexibility and configurability...

I need to sell my non working Fitbit watch. Anyone can please buy for free?

The crazy thing is how cool Fitbits were in 2015. Google had the opportunity to do some really interesting stuff with wearables but blew it

Meta crmstrgogo Apr 26, 2023

Fitbit was a terrible product and business. It would keep failing within the warranty period and they would keep shipping a replacement. At some point I had 4-5 Fitbits just lying around.

Same i had about 6 they were such a shit product even the most up to date products would fail within the year
