Alright so Yahoo went downfall because they kept on guiding their website with self-generated contents and articles instead of letting users create their own like YouTube or Instagram. Nokia and Blackberry went down because they are unable to keep up with shifting paradigms for phones. But companies like Meta and Netflix, there are not strong alternatives for them. Tiktok, Snapshot killing Meta? They are strong competitors but they are in the same space and do not have that different products. Amazon video, Disney killing Netflix? I don’t think so because their contents are way less diverse and not even that good. So what do you think the reasons for this market swings + people insisting that they are sinking ships. I think they are still irreplaceable
I believe the issue with Yahoo was the search results were not as 1) good and 2) fast as Google’s. I know because I think the year was 2002 or 2003 and I had been using Yahoo and Altavista up to that point. My friend told me to check out google.com and literally that was the last time I ever used any other search engine. I mean once in a while I check Bing for different results but rarely
Do you think google search can ever be disrupted given Google dominant position in various markets? (Mobile, browser, maps, email). I mean is there any chance google can go they way of yahoo in the next 10 years?
Google is not in the business of search, it's in the business of aggregating trends. Idea is to predicting/identifying long term search trends (before anyone else does), hoping to be better than competition and keep tweaking the aggregations to serve the forecasted trend. This logic goes with everything they do, search is an example. Thanks.
Netflix and meta aren’t diversified. Facebook is a one trick pony that bought all their innovations. Netflix focussed only on streaming. Both of them got disrupted by competition. Tiktok is eating facebooks lunch.
I don’t think Facebook is a company that bought out its success. Their acquisitions are like WhatsApp and Instagram. Tbh, they didn’t purchase a lot of companies to become successful
If they didn’t buy those two companies they would be done already
For Netflix, Amazon prime is a strong competitor, and others as well.. now a days many regional OTD s are coming with competing offers, that is also a reason for many people to unsubscribe.
Anything that takes your screen time is our competitor. How many times have you opted to swipe on tiktok instead of watching a 1hr show?
I really never watched tictok.. instead read posts in the FB groups.
its just absurd that these companies achieved that much wealth for no solid reason in the first place. fb - its just a social media platform, is it like a basic necessity that you can not live without?? same goes with netflix. People have real needs and issues to deal with.
How long can you stay without opening Instagram or WhatsApp or any social media app?? Ohh wait you are using blind right now..
there is the problem, its just too many of them, right?
The minute Discovery+ came out with all seasons of My 600 Lb Life, my Netflix sub was over
One word : Diversification. These companies focused too much on single stream of revenue. During good days they shud have focused on creating multiple revenue streams like Google, Amazon, Apple. I won't be surprised further more downfall.
"Amazon video, Disney killing Netflix? I don’t think so because their contents are way less diverse and not even that good." This is your problem. Your assessment is wrong. Netflix's content is mediocre. They only have some shows which I do not really want to watch. Their movies are terrible.

In the case of Netflix I have to imagine that the world opening up and people wanting to do literally anything but look at a screen has a little bit to do with it, so I think it’s a short term swing. But I obviously have no idea what the reality is
Yeah maybe lots of people signed up because they were stuck at home but don’t actually watch much tv
