Just got off a negotiation call with a recruiter at a start up and she straight up told me not to listen to levels.fyi as people inflate their salaries on it. She proceeded to reaffirm that my offer was the top of the band for my level. It’s still ~$20k lower than comparable offers I see on levels.fyi Never heard of this before from a recruiter. Was this just a negotiation tactic? Current TC: 220k Offer TC: 250k
Tell her her data is deflated.
Lol, i cant stop laughing
:D
It’s possible some people inflate their salaries there but this is 100% a negotiation tactic. I’ve fallen for similar tricks before, don’t do it!
Offer and TC or gtfo
Updated
You used levels.fyi as a negotiation data point?
Tell her you know friends in similar positions and levels.
thats unrealistic though, i dont have friends
I once had a negotiation call with the head of recruiting at a startup after I played hardball with my point recruiter who used to be head of recruiting at a big tech company and he was an incredibly confident gaslighter. I’d tell him what I expected based on offers my friends were getting - some at the company he used to be head of recruiting for, and he’d just say my friends were lying lmao
wait so how'd you reply back? how'd the full situation/convo go down? pls tell the whole story this sounds interesting lol
@LinkedIn Not that interesting a story. I remember he had me on the phone for what felt like an hour, but I just kept saying “no, nah, no”. Eventually he gave up trying to sway me on the phone and countered back (over email maybe?) with a decent offer
This is an employer's market. There are probably many people waiting to accept the offer. You may negotiate but be prepared to have the offer rescinded
How to lose good talent 101. There is a reason they're talking to you and offering you instead of "the people waiting in line". 🙄
@unity this is the most naive interpretation. They are offering you because they just got to you first/you just got lucky. And remember lines are fifo😂. How egotistical do you have to be to believe you are the only one able to clear interviews and everyone else who cleared probably didn’t do as well as you when the only information you have is “you were offered and other people *might’ve not* been offered.”
No, that recruiter is doing the job recruiters do.
Plus one - which company?
Its possible the data is skewed on levels.fyi
Yes but not by a lot
Levels.fyi is bloated with historic data from boom times skewing the numbers.
That's why you filter by year.
Recruiters take down offers from levels that are legit but high. She’s def lying
Didn’t even know they could do that wtf
My Roku offer magically disappeared from levels.fyi (FYI)
