Just got off a call with a Fortune 50 company for a new role. When we were chatting about compensation, I said I would need the middle to higher range that was posted on the job description. The recruiter laughed and said they had to put that salary range for legal reasons but it’s actually not true. They have a budget for the low range. They just try to lure people in. When I tried to negotiate, they said “At least we aren’t having layoffs. HR knows what people are willing to take because they are desperate for a job. And we’re playing into that.” I was shocked they would tell me this.
nothing wrong in being genuine!
Name and shame. But harsh reality of today.
At least they are telling the truth which is refreshing
Mind sharing the name of the Fortune 50, atleast won't waste time applying
Recruiter will definitely low ball to maximize his/her commission. Should have told them not to be cocky .. recruiters are the first ones to go in any company during layoffs.
How is commission based on lowballing? I thought commission was based on hire/no-hire
Not every company has same policy .. smallish tech companies will reward recruiters for a successful lowball.
Tell them you’re ok with the lower range, interview while applying to other places, then tell them you have a different offer at the end to get them to highball (actually get another offer, even if less desirable)
How the turn tables
It’s a two way street, if you feel you are getting lowballed no reason to stay around - just collect a paycheck, quiet quit and jump to something better when you can. Companies who lowball don’t value loyalty anyway, they deserve their time and money wasted.
Don’t take the first offer. Always negotiate.
Welcome to reality
Nothing ever goes as planned in this accursed world
The longer you live, the more you realize that in this reality only pain, suffering and futility exist
