Referral Confusion Question

As a recent business grad I figured I have a quite confusion about the referral process. When does a referral for one should be sent in, before I apply for a position or after? I guess it could depend on a company. Trying to find a better approach. For Google, I heard it suggested to be sent in before applying but what about other companies, like Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft, LinkedIn, Amazon, Visa, Atlassian, Salesforce, Dropbox, Uber, Lyft? Since everyone usually knows about their company's usual referral process, would appreciate if you can give me an insight into this.

Generally people ask for a referral, find or what they need to do, then do it. Do you know anyone you know at the companies you listed?

I am just reaching out mainly on LinkedIn to people, and I genuinely want to meet with them, get to know them, learn about their experience in the company and let them as well see me as a potential candidate from their end. Basically, proper way. I didn't reach out to all the companies listed because I want to apply everywhere at same time but timewise, it's hard to manage this, and I am trying to figure what approach I have to take. maybe I am making it more complicated but I want to have a better impression on them about myself.

Many companies give referral bonuses to people who refer someone that gets hired. In those cases, the referral almost always has to happen before you apply. I you want someone to refer you, better to talk to them first.
