Hi, I was pipped a couple of years from Amazon after a long 5 year stint. An unfortunate team change and was pipped by the new team management. Let’s not get into reasons or how justified it was as Amazon management and culture feels lowest rating (10-15%) is dead weight and have to trimmed every year :). I gave up after a month of focus plan as the manager was documenting every minor stuff (missed diversity training, time to reply to email, number of code review comments, wiki formatting etc). I could see that the decision was already made by then and I was just allowing him to mentally toy with me. Looking at a few people in close Circles currently working at Amazon, who I feel are not super smart or super hardworking (they are decent, but not extra ordinary), I want to go back just to satisfy by crushed confidence (ego) and feel that I am equally good as these people. Combined with the fact, my manager during the focus plan once asked me to ask myself - “if Amazon is the right bar for me or may be I should look at companies which are more aligned with my goals” - that statement was soul crushing :( it wasn’t that I was in research, it was an Alexa team with usual backend work required like most teams. Can someone in recruiting or other higher ups comment how this can be achieved ? Officially this is possible with VP approval. Has this happened in the past? For example, theoretically it is possible that I am a great PM and not a good engineer right ? Other reason being - being an Asian, Amazon is the company that recruits the most in Asia offices and I have messed it up. It was part of my dream to internally move within the company in the next 2-3 years and that part is disturbed now. TC: 280 Yoe: 8 #pip #devplan
Number of code review comments and wiki formatting? How do managers have time to stay on top of that?
Yes they find the stupidest reasons to get rid of you.
Please refer me to replace you at Adobe if you do this
Adobe pay is not the best, not even close to FAANG - just saying.
So you want to sleep with your cheating ex one last time to see if you still got it
Yaeh, looking for a right closure.
Go to therapy instead.
+1
This is not your ego, it's stockholm syndrome.
True but it’s hard to swallow the “pipped” fact even after 2 years (under confidence)
You don't need their approval or recognizement. Imagine if you get in and start getting abused by your manager? Are you going to stay just to prove you're good? Move on!
That's a very stupid reason! And I'm already someone who's probably doing too much to fight my Amazon PIP myself! I think what you should have done in the situation is brought HRBP and complained on your manager about harassment if they were using irrelevant metrics to justify pip.
Hahahaha lodging an HR complaint against your manager because they pipped you. Jesus Christ amazon sounds toxic.
LinkedIn, yup, you're correct. I'm also sure it's by design -- the reports keeping the PIP-happy manager on their toes! 😂 It's actually the official procedure and recommendation at Amazon. You cannot Appeal the Focus or the Pivot Entry, only the end result of adhering to the Pivot Entry plan, not the entry itself, nor the plan itself. So, filling a harassment complaint is officially the procedure to get it taken care of by HRBP!
Cringiest reason to want to go back. What do you do for fun? Try eating coco puffs cereal again and you might find something more interesting.
Wrong reasons to go back. You don’t need to prove to anyone else.
Why y'all ever stay beyond using Amazon as an early interview warmup is beyond me.
Because we Hire and Develop the Best.
And you're right a lot about your leaders you have to make them play the hunger games every year. Frugally of course. Btw how is 6% excess per year frugal?
Adobe > Amazon. Hang in there
That is true of any company
this is 100% true. I am interviewing. All the companies give freebies to people who interview. we dont give sh** its not that that matters, but think about this. Only reason amazon looks attractive is due to its stock which went high in last 10 years. Other than that, it is a maniac company and it sucks to be part of it
