Recently, passed the phone screen for an engineering ict3 position at apple. While talking to the manager and understanding what I will be working on , I realized that the work I would have been doing at apple would be basically building dashboards something that can be done easilywith tableau etc. Besides that, got a sense that I will end up doing data engineering instead of actual software engineering. Having been in a data engineering focused team before I knew how soul sucking the work is and just how dispensable the work is and how sde growth can get stagnated at these teams. Hence while on the call, in my haste told the hm that I won't be a good fit for this position. Besides that had other offers, but they don't pay as much as an apple offer would have paid. Regretting that decision now. Did I do the right thing? What would you all have done? Should I contact the hm again and check if we can restart the process?
Life is long. You’ll lose if you optimize for short term $$$
I feel all jobs are dispensable and I know data engineering can be boring but it’s the oil you need to make the engine run smoothly. Every team needs data engineers so I find the work/skillset quite transferable.
In my prev team I found the work I did with data engineering (building pipelines, orchestrating etl tasks, data etl etc) to be non transferrable to backend engineering/fullstack engineering
Was this for a team related to data governance infrastructure?
What team at Ms? What other offers?
So you are interviewing with DS/DE position? Does this team also recruit swe?
I would have done the same thing. At IC4, I would really want to work on something I am passionate about.
Aah my bad ict3
