What happens when most of your team is Indian?
Hi, I have a degree in humanities, have been leetcoding since the past few months, the interview went very well and I was confident of my performance. They told me that my coding and DSA were up to the standards but had to be rejected because of my degree. My mistake : I failed to disclose this info because I was advised that non tech degrees shouldn't be mentioned in the resume. When the final round interviewer asked me about my educational background, I was honest about it and informed him. Later on in a separate, informal phone call, I was told that even if the interviewer had not caught this shortcoming, it would have come up during the background check and at that stage they might have blacklisted me. I was very hopeful about landing this job and feel like all the effort of the past 3 months has gone to waste. Y.O.E. : 1+ T.C : 12.5 LPA
Can't believe it even Amazon does that.
It’s common in India. Used to be the case in the USA up until a few years ago, and India will likely catch up soon.
I have worked with a CA turned software engineer and a software engineer with MSc maths so non CS degree should be okay. You will find a ton of examples from civil mechanical electrical background in Amazon. You might be just unlucky this time. Mostly your experience was not relevant this time. for anyone with 3+ years of experience degree is generally not an issue. Keep trying.
Amazon does not require a CS degree for SDE lateral interviews. It does require you to clear an interview on CS fundamentals so it's likely the interviewer stopped because of your gaps there. Not sure why the recruiter mentioned background check etc because this is different from my understanding. If they explicitly said degree, that's a bummer.
They explicitly mentioned the degree. I was told that I performed well in the rest of the interviews, was asked leetcode, beginners' system design and leadership principles.
Very odd. I don't recall this criteria at all. Tough luck OP :(
I think the problem is not non-CS degree but non-engineering degree.
Hey OP what I would say is to do some small courses on CS fundamental like DBMS, OS, Networking and mention these courses in ur resume such that in future if anyone asks about your branch then you can say that you have always been in touch with CS subjects and have also done some courses.
Hang in there. The leetcoding is definitely not a waste of time. This emphasis on non engineering background is unique to India. Options to mitigate: Keep applying and focusing on tc growth. Continue investing in skill set, both LC and actual skills set. Build a network. Simultaneously enroll in an online/dist education CS program. For the long term you will solve this once and for all. Another option is to get out of India and try.
Thanks a lot for the advice, I will enroll in a distance education course and will try for some companies which hire non cs people.
