Hi folks Currently I am living in Seattle area. My TC is low for my YOE. But I am financially comfortable (not independent) and own a condo here. I recently got an offer from HFT in NYC which is 70% more than my current comp. I also got Another offer from Microsoft almost same as my current comp. I didn’t make it to other faangs this year. Though in q2 and q3 of 2022, i have a chance to interview with them again (FB, Google, Snowflake etc) after cooldown. Is it ok to relocate to NYC at this stage of my career? HFT in NYC is all cash. Current TC: $230K YOE: 9.5 #faang #sre #sreinterview #facebook #amazon #google
Give more details on HFT offer.
What do you do ? For HFT is it 390k + bonus ? If yes any clue on bonus % ?
probably around 390 including bonus, bet it’s like 200k base with 100% annual bonus, which is how they usually do it in finance.
Relocate but consider renting out your condo when you do so, with 1 year leases. And rent in NYC. If you dislike the company or city, at least it’s not a permanent decision
Depends on which HFT. If it is one of the elites such as Jane Street, HRT etc, it’s a no brainer to join it
Its Citadel Also i am on h1b. Changing jobs and relocating is not that easy
Ask for remote
HFT don’t do remote. During covid they relocated all employees and families to palm beach in florida

The big city isn’t for everyone and NYC is THEE big city. I think it’ll come down to what you like most about Seattle and the odds of replicating that or surpassing that in NYC. For one you won’t have anywhere close to outdoor access, which for me was the best thing about Seattle. I grew up in NYC so I’m heavily biased towards it.. been there and did it and would do it again for the right TC.
The NorthBend and Snoqualmie is the most beautiful region in the world. California and Switzerland are nothing. In-fact they are Shady compared to Snoqualmie
with a couple YOE at some reputable HFT, you can be pulling much more than 70% more than your current TC. I’ve heard of regular software engineers at Jane Street making 600k - 1m.
does regular = L6+ or are senior swes making that much (I know there are no levels)
it’s discretionary, loosely correlated with tenure/performance is the pattern i’ve seen
