What should my rent budget be? I want to live alone, preferably 1 bd with in unit w/d. I don’t want a roommate by any means. Prefer to live in dc over va/md. Comment your thoughts. TC- 106,000 DC area #housing #rent #newgradsalary #amazon #capitalone
It depends on how close to a metro stop you want to be - that’s a huge factor in prices. I highly recommend the yellow/green and western red lines
Your rental budget is based on what you make. No more than 30% I typically aim for 25%
DC is a top 5 most expensive place to live in the US, but companies always suppress income there because there’s no tech workers there, so they use cost of labor, not just cost of living. Just like how Honolulu is usually the highest cost of living area, even compared to the major cities, but you’ll never find a comparable tech job salary there because there’s not much competition.
I like how you used both explain supply and demand and evil corporation wage manipulation as the reason for low wages. I bet you're the type of person to bet on both teams.
I personally believe talent should be paid within a vey tight pay band, regardless of location, and people should be free to move wherever they need to be happy. If the output of 2 people are the same and they have the same YOE, then they should be paid fairly similarly. I don’t think it’s up to the job to think about your personal expenses and make sure you are living comfortably in a luxury home. Just like how it’s not in the company consideration whether you are a spendy person or a frugal person, I don’t think it’s necessarily on them for you to be able to afford a luxury high rise apt with a doorman and all the amenities.
3.5k
You can always live in McLean/Tyson's corner and make it to downtown in 25mins. Can find a 1br for under 2k in McLean , albeit a bit old
Silver Spring downtown area close to metro are around $2000 for one bed room apartments
For ppl who voted below 2000...post your apt community: this year rent price is rocket high...I paid 1900 at noVA with in unit w/d....
Check out embassy towers in Adams Morgan DC. You can get a nice one bedroom for $2,200 or less. But a nice 1 bd w/d in NW or NOMA will be at least $2,000. DM if you have further questions. I have lived in NW DC for 8 years now.
2300 minimum if you want to have space or like where you live
Dang that’s Seattle downtown pricing and companies rank DC lower in TC adjustment.
DC is pretty expensive which is why most people stay in Arlington or other nearby places from where DC is still accessible but are cheaper in terms of rent
