5 YOE post undergrad, the last 2 in technology consulting with Accenture. Struggling to break into big #tech - any resume advice for me pursuing a #techcareer ?
“BA in Human Rights”
Yeah, it’s my actual degree (https://bulletin.columbia.edu/columbia-college/departments-instruction/human-rights/). It didn’t end up being financially possible for me to pursue a career in the field (think United Nations, Human Rights Watch, etc). It’s similar to a Political Science degree or a Race and Ethnicity Studies degree.
Yeah but they cracked a career in software. That's commendable. And it looks like OP isn't smug about their BA as if it makes them better than anyone else, which is even better! Good job OP 👏
I'm wondering how does a person move to a technical role so soon after doing a 'BA in Human Rights' Your reply may help many others trying the same
Ivy League branding imo and type A personality of someone going to that high tier of a school. It’s why you see many PMs at big tech with liberal arts/humanities degrees from top schools.
Good spacing. Name is gigantic, and I don’t know where your contact info is unless it’s hidden. I would be a little cautious about listing your internships. It could present an opportunity for unconscious bias….NOW, Planned Parenthood are seen as political entities.
I hid my contact info for the purpose of posting. Thanks for the styling feedback! That’s really helpful advice. I was from a political background but that’s no longer my focus. I’ll remove!
It’s your experience so I don’t know if I would advocate for full removal, just be aware of who the audience is. For example, I’ve had 15-20 different resumes when I was interviewing and would judiciously edit based upon the org I’m submitting to.
Glad you took my advise and shared the resume here — on first glance, it appears you have results on most of your bullets and each bullet is clearly in STAR format. I would say the thing that’s missing is: “So what?” E.g. - 2nd bullet from top appears like your role’s responsibility and doesn’t tell me what it did for the company or the client. The other thing I would recommend is swapping the company and title. But overall it’s actually a pretty solid resume. Are you using referrals to apply to jobs? If not, perhaps consider that because this resume is good enough to land interviews. Do not move Skills/education to top as others recommended - this is a good format.
That first paragraph belongs with other cringe on LinkedIn 😂 it's so fluffy! Isn't that the basic expectation for your job? Why you saying it again?
What font are you using? It looks so clean
Agreed, it’s a slick look.
Put your skills section at the top Also what role are you trying for in big tech?
Interesting! I haven’t seen many resume templates that start with the skills at the top. Thanks for the tip. I have been targeting client/customer facing roles or internal program and project manager roles. I’m very much a people person but also very good at the details of performance tracking, schedule management, risk identification, etc.
