How do you deal with resume gaps? I have a gap between the end of 2020 (pandemic cuts) and early 2021 when I found a job ( 5months unemployed moving to different cities, broke since people were yet not hiring) It seems hiring teams, specifically recruiters, like to pretend the pandemic did not affect labor markets globally and somehow this gap is “a red flag”. Now I’m thinking that with thousands of new layoffs this will be yet another gap recruiters will pretend are somehow employees fault. I really resent the fact this macroeconomic issues are something individuals have to justify like they are not affecting thousands if not millions of people. Thoughts? #recruiters #hiringcommittee #employers #layoff #hr
Just omit the exact months. Ie job A. 2019-2021 job b 2022-current
I’m a recruiter and I’ve never cared if a gap was less than a year. More than a year and I might ask for clarification.
Thanks for answering. This gap gives me nightmares.
“Clarification”. Nice way to rationalize a request for potentially private and sensitive information with the plausible deniability that allows the company to skirt the law. Same as asking about citizenship. Hopefully this recession is years long and you’ll have to justify YOUR gap is more than a year jfc rent seeking gatekeeper.
Feel free to round up and down on your resume and LI, use accurate dates on the background check once you get the job.
How do you deliver this accurate dates? Only if requested?
Yes, once you’ve been offered the job, if they do a background check it will probably be by a 3rd party, that’s where you use your accurate dates (year/month) so that it matches their research.
How many years of work history do you have? If it's like 10 years + list your experience as "Relevant Experience" this sends a signal that you're only listing what is reinvent to the job your applying to. Conversely, you can list that time as a sabbatical where you took time to practice coding, study for certs you decided not to persue, ProDev or other stuff like that.
That sounds great in theory. In practice applying to more than 5 jobs a day will make this exercise pretty inefficient. I appreciate the thought tho.

Agree with you. This is just how the tech industry is. It’s brutal and unsustainable and recruiters and managers alike have low empathy
