I was interviewing for a P3 role but received an offer for P2 at Advanced proficiency. Is it possible to negotiate for a P3 offer? #riotgames
Others already gave really good answers so won't touch on those, but I'd also encourage you to look at the whole picture and not just $$$. I came from "big tech" and sure could be making more, but I'm significantly happier here. If your current team is good then it's a bit harder of a decision but working at Riot feels special and I don't plan to leave anytime soon (assuming you're a gamer or follow esports, if not then it probably won't feel as special).
Appreciate the insights! Yeah, I applied to Riot specifically b/c I wanted to work somewhere that makes things I use every day. I don’t have any qualms with my current team other than a lack of interest in any of the products we’re working on, but Riot has always been a dream job to me. I suppose the combo of downleveling and pretty significantly lower comp is a bit discouraging, but all the feedback people have shared has been very helpful for planning how to approach these conversations moving forward into negotiations
Not sure about your Amazon comp and if you've hit the cliff yet, but one thing I like about Riot is that there's no cliff and instead it accumulates over time due to LTI. Also Riot has been pretty good about sustainably growing and I'm not worried about getting laid off (very grateful). I have no kids or people depending on me so I'm biased, but throughout my career I've been getting raises and my happiness didn't really change once I had enough to buy what I want. My biggest jump in happiness was joining Riot and not because I could get the Riot gunbuddy (okay maybe a little)
@OP Have you decided yet? I want to know whether to say welcome to Riot or not 😁
Yeah I ended up taking the offer! All the advice in here was super helpful and I realized I think I valued the work culture and pivot to games more than the short term pay hit. Super excited (and nervous) to make the switch!
Then welcome to Riot!!!

Doubt that you can negotiate your level. You can potentially negotiate a sign-on bonus. Maybe base comp but might be hard.
A couple follow-up questions: What're the differences in expectations between P2 and P3 Software Engineers? Any idea how effective my current comp would be as leverage? I was so excited to work at Riot, but their comp with maximum multipliers (especially considering Annual Performance Bonus is prorated by days worked during the first year) comes in at around 30k lower than my current comp. I've been fighting with this decision for multiple days now
The difference at that level is primarily related to your competency as an engineer. Both related to technical skills and how independently you would be able to operate at a team. The HM in this case likely has some reservations from the interviews and want to make sure you are set up to succeed. Over leveling can be more painful. From a comp perspective there is a lot of overlap between the bands so your base could be fairly similar between advanced P2 and learning P3. It’s not uncommon that you take a short term hit in TC when changing jobs as you reset bonuses. I’m guessing that it would be the same if you quit and came back to Amazon tomorrow. Sign on bonuses can help bridge that. I’d recommend talking to the recruiter about it. Try to position it as you and them problem solving this together. As in, you want to take the offer and you just have this obstacle you need to get over. Hope this helps and good luck!
