What kind of background do you need to be in a risk advisory role? I'm currently in consumer banking and am interested in learning more about this area. What kind of risks do you mostly look at? Legal? Financial? Strategic? Do people have degrees in statistics? The more info the better!

What do you think is wrong with a kid who got rejected by 9 colleges?
Obviously depends very much on the area of Risk you'll be working in. If you have banking experience (and ideally experience working in a compliance or risk team) then you will probably be of interest. Also those with Analytics and Data Science backgrounds are in demand. Otherwise if you can show your potential and have relevant industry experience its still worth a go.
