A large portion of their users is under the age of ten, and those kids have no sense how much money they spend there every day. I answered a phone call from their recruiter who had contacted me through Linkedin. They are very proud of how many elementary and middle school students are on their platform. They said something like, "One out of every X kids is on our platform, and Y percent are paid users." (I'm not sure if those X and Y numbers are public info.) I am shocked by the way they are so proud of exploiting kids for money. With one bad PR/headline, their stock will plummet to the drainage. Consider headlines like "Pervert Predators," "Kids Hurting Theirselves," or "Kids Fighting/Bullying in School" as a result of what happened on Roblox, the list can go on....🤯
Companies have been advertising and selling to kids since the beginning of time, i don’t see any difference now. There are grown people spending thousands on digital goods every year, doesn’t seem to just be kids paying for these things
It's different from the micro transactions that is only one click away.
OP at least Roblox does not influence elections, spread hate and selling people private data. Gaming also bring joy to a kid and they are not as dumb as you think , this is tech era. Do not give BS to justify evil Meta ✌🏼
Then what should tiktok, fb and Instagram, snap be called?
their user base is not minors.
Large part of social media is 18 or younger.r
They are selling a service for kids. Specifically, that service is a metaverse where they can play with their friends. I find it impressive, that game is the Metaverse that Meta is trying to create.
🤔
So does Disney
Disney doesn't ask for $10 everyday from kids...
Does Roblox?
Did you just wake up today and decide you were going to talk trash about Roblox? They’re a business so they’re evil for making money? Are you even familiar enough with the product to know that there aren’t controls or parental blocks in place to stop those transactions from happening? Honestly, I feel like you only created this post to start trouble
Seems like OP got turned down after the recruiter screen and is pissed.
LMAO.... They begged me to interview, and I said give me two weeks to brush up leetcode. nothing personal, just shocked by their unethical revenue stream and bad selling skills.
It’s so bad that I’m my interview they asked how I would solve friendly fraud. Example they gave was Kids taking their parents credit card, and prarents wanting a refund
😱😱😱😱😱
Did you have any good ideas for that? My first thought is that credit card companies have effective ML systems for detecting likely fraudulent use. They could train their own ML models, and then require extra verification on transactions flagged by their model.
you work at meta and you're complaining about the ethics of a gaming platform for kids? lmaooo
If roblox were free and showing them ads like we do, would that be better?
The employees there are so entitled. One of the hiring manager from economy team was so boastful of his accomplishments and mocked my career trajectory during interview. What an ah.
Was it the director of product who says they’re employe 150 at Facebook? And went down all the things they built at FB? You’re not there anymore . Move on.
Microsoft, any more details you can share. Was it at Roblox? Was it G.L.?
Is this post trying to justify Meta’s existence? So now all video gaming and online gaming companies are more evil than Meta?
Quote from a colleague: Almost all games with micro transactions are evil. Kids don’t understand value, so they capitalize on that. It’s all the more important as a parent to keep a tight check on a kids online expenses. Remember, a kid who feels it’s ok to buy a $100 skin for his avatar (I can still understand a $1 skin) will never understand the impact $100 can have on a day to day basis.
I see your point, but many parents have insufficient control over their kids. I’m not blaming Roblox for that. Same thing with adults, some cannot manage their money!
