Hi! I recently received new grad offers from Roblox and Palantir, for San Mateo and NYC respectively. Roblox TC: 262k first year, 225k recurring Palantir TC: 245k first year, 200k recurring Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to negotiate my Palantir offer to match Roblox. I’m curious about what Blind thinks! I’ve read that Palantir is a good place to learn a lot as a new grad, but the promotion and compensation growth process seems a lot less clear. Stock in both companies hasn’t been looking so hot, and both seem overvalued(?) I prefer NYC as a place to live, but I’m not sure if the bay area would be better for my career. QUESTION: Which company is better for New Grad? What would you choose? I’m somehow trying to factor all of these in: - compensation - location - how much i’ll learn - companies growth - my career growth Thanks!! #newgrad #roblox #palantir #compensation #new york #offer #swe
Compensation: both are pretty close, don’t consider this as a deciding factor Location: Palantir has a better location (IMO). San Mateo is….alright Personal growth: both will grow you a lot as a new grad engineer. PLTR has a ton of people leave to found startups Company growth: no idea Career growth: see Personal growth IMO, I would go to Palantir unless you have any interest in being in games/metaverse, etc.
thanks! this is helpful
Didn’t expect the results to be so in favor of Roblox. What’s the reasoning?
People not knowing what we do
CoL of San Mateo isn't much lower than NYC, so that's probably not a factor. As for growth, Palantir is pretty flat so progression is more of an unknown, anecdotal example but one friend of mine stayed in Palantir for 3 years and never got any bump from his new grad offer. He eventually left for L4 in AWS. Not too sure about Roblox though
Wow... that sounds really rough. I heard Roblox has decent refreshers, and the average promotion timeline is every ~2 years, so if you plan on staying for more than 2 years, you'll probably get better compensation (although most people probably tend to hop companies after 2 years anyways).
That’s a big worry of mine too, getting stuck in the same new grad compensation because of Palantir’s flat structure would be rough
Both good options I'm sure. I imagine Palantir being somewhat dependent on geopolitics? But don't really know. There's plenty of non-game stuff to do at Roblox, and IMO the "metaverse" thing is just a buzzword. We're YouTube but for games. There's a lot of backend, infra, full-stack, ML, etc. One of the reasons I joined Roblox (from Google) is the combination of breadth and depth of possible projects (not more breadth than Google of course, but I wanted a smaller company and for a <2000-person company there's a lot going on).
If I were you, I’d pick based on location: nyc > san mateo :)
hi op, i have the same question. What did u end up choosing?
Dang I'm also in a similar situation, lmk what u pick lol
Palantir is an evil company the does sketchy shit for governments. Run from then
+1 Palantir is evil
Owned by Peter Thiel one of the worst people on the planet
