I’ve been fascinated with rockets and space exploration lately. I’d like to learn more about them and see if my fascination ends with it being a hobby or enough to switch careers 1) Any suggestions on how to learn more about them? 2) What’s the job market like for SW folks (SpaceX, NASA)? 3) Any other tips? Thanks :)
JPL, Boeing, Northrop, Teradyne... None r going to be what you’re used to, culture wise. Slow, bureaucratic
Raytheon has great opportunities for sw people. You can do all kinds of classified stuff
Slow, bureaucratic, highly inefficient?
you can try joining amateur rocket launch groups to get some street cred.
That sounds fun. Do you know of any around the Bay Area?
There are some. Check meetup.com.
I read on blind from your coworkers that the development of the airpods is on par with rocket science (and brain surgery) and this is the main reason people are buying them so perhaps looking into changing teams? Seriously though, SpaceX and blue origin are hiring SWEs (at least here) buy be prepared for quite a regression in pay and work life balance. Also, you're no longer the rockstar in the company, the actual aerospace people are.
I’m not unsatisfied with my job (for now), but I wanted to explore and learn other things I’m interested in. Life is too short to focus on one thing :). Also I doubt AirPods is on par with brain surgery... what the. Haha. Looking for fun ways to learn rocket science. I realized I like building physical things, maybe I should go back to school
Go to rocket science school, take a few rocket science courses and get a job at a rocket science company.
What’s a good rocket science school?
Caltech ftw. (Not my Alma mater, but when big bang theory was running with a story Sheldon used to work there).
Spacex.com/careers - you are welcome. Interviews are not easy but definitely not google/fb level. TC is competitive outside SoCal
