Roku offer and culture

Considering a Sr SWE ML offer from Roku. I am on H1b and really worried about their culture especially after recent layoffs at ROKU. It's very likely that I will be working close to the VP of Search aund Recommendations who carry a pretty bad reputation. I have heard horrible stories about him. Anyone joined Roku recently? Care to share your story? I am more interested in the culture and this VP. YoE : 5 Google TC : $350k L5 (just got promoted from L4 to L5) Roku TC : No final numbers yet : Range $430k-$480k. Can stretch if I have multiple offers. Update : I rejected Roku's offer. The recruiter almost raised it to std ML SWE offer at Roku that could have raised my salary by 35%. I received enough DMs from current and ex-ROKU employees about the bad culture and the said VP of the team to make this decision. If the culture and leaders within the company represent what's being circulated on social forums I expect Roku to go down. In an org it's not the product or customers, it's your employees who help it grow. Stories on Roku about firing H1b people for almost no reason, taking advantage of their disability or personal health situation are shocking.

Bolt is saying that you should be at Google.

How did you get the interview at Roku?

Google u5ibd5 OP Dec 3, 2022

A recruiter reached out about a month ago

Google hotflames Dec 3, 2022

Who is the VP? And what is bad about them?

Google u5ibd5 OP Dec 3, 2022

Apparently there's a VP of Search and Recommendations and he seems to carry quite a bad reputation inside and outside of the company.

Google hotflames Dec 3, 2022

Oh. How exactly?also, on the comp front you should be able to do better than what Roku is offering.

Stay at goog

Meta karthikmil Dec 3, 2022

Don’t join if you already know people you are going to work with is shitty.

Twitter newsql Dec 3, 2022

If it is money then would suggest checkout how much you will have after tax. Also, is it worth to join Roku based on current market? G is pretty much safe.

When the tradeoffs are pro: money, con: literally everything else, it’s usually a bad move.

Good thought

Google ARRF32000 Dec 3, 2022

Why are you leaving Google though? Comp?

Google u5ibd5 OP Dec 3, 2022

Comp and I am not sure how fast I can get to L6 from here

Google ARRF32000 Dec 3, 2022

At Google you can pretty much say if you'll get a promotion in the future by just looking at your teams charter for next year and if you are working on the top item on the charter.

With that TC number you arent working anywhere near the Search and Recommendation VP. Also just a heads up, those are only rumors about the VP, honestly I havent seen anything alarming from him at my time here. Also with L5 I dont think youd ever interact with the VP, most of your interactions would be in quarterly all hands etc, so you dont need to worry, if at all that is a concern. Hes not going to be coming to your desk or slacking you for advice anytime soon, so rest assured.

Google ARRF32000 Dec 3, 2022

What's the comp like in search and recommendation?

Roku vAsY14 Dec 3, 2022

Lastly I wouldnt recommend leaving Google for any company, if Job security is your concern right now. Its going to be a rough ride the next few quarters at any company you go too.

Roku KLzs40 Dec 3, 2022

YoE : 5 & I will be working close to the VP of Search and Recommendations. lol.

Google u5ibd5 OP Dec 4, 2022

I'm told Roku is a fairly flat org and I will pretty much get to work with a few leaders. Despite the fact that I work with him or not yet being in close proximity is still believed to be dangerous as per the stories circulating about him on Blind and some other channels. I am leaning towards rejecting the offer as mental peace is more important than $$$ I can't imagine handling a situation of sudden layoff just because of this VP's bad reputation and his history of firing people w/o any notice irrespective of how I perform at work.
