Databricks phone screen experience

Recently, I had interviewed for the L5 position and was asked LC Hard question which I could not solve. Is the bar this high for all the interviews. If you see LC tagged questions there are few questions getting pasted all over. #tech

Hows Splunk doing now Good to join(India)?

Salesforce ranger2 Apr 22

Why join Databricks at this time? There is no upside and IPO is still far away plus burning money

Ya I had the same experience last year, they wanted me to design and code something similar to a concurrent ledger in 50 min and of course it has to compile and run ! God knows when the interviewer themselves read about any lock free DS, let alone code them.

Databricks akdasa Apr 24

Oh now, they asked me an actual, real life question rather than trapping the rain water. Recruiters always mention in preparation notes the concurrency might be one of the things to prepare from.

Uber zHmh13 Apr 24

Real life question ? When was the last time you designed and coded a DS let alone a concurrent ledger. Most of the real life scenarios don't involve coding them from scratch and mostly involve assessing and using them. I'll probably go work for the Java or Go team if that was my expertise. There are lot of different ways to test someone's knowledge on concurrency. Don't be an a** in the interviews pls.

Can you describe the question or LC link? I can help answer. See my tag.

Questions are hard. Your performance is expected to be near flawless. You're encouraged to think outside the box. Your interviewer could get bad signals aside from your technical performance. Based on your comments I wouldn't think this is a good fit.

Uber zHmh13 Apr 24

I don't know if it's unnecessarily hard or that the company policy necessitates to be hard ? I don't see data bricks doing some mind blowing work compared to what AWS or Google is doing. All companies are churning out amazing products which are patent worthy, but some companies just have to make it look tough for no reason.

Databricks Bricksters Apr 24

No, it is more like you think they are LC hard because you couldn’t solve it. Our basic questions are LC medium at most, but follow-ups might reach LC hard.
