My wife got into medical school (MD, not DO) in the west coast and we’re deciding between these two cities. She’s lucky to get an acceptance so early in the cycle (it’s nepotism bc of her connections), but she doesn’t anticipate getting anymore acceptances. These are essentially the two worst cities in the US in my opinion, but what do you think? On a side note: I left AWS to come to the company that I’m with bc it was fully remote, but is AWS hiring in SF? My previous team was in Texas, but I could definitely get a referral, left on good terms. Please let me know! I am LC ready (200+) as can do everything except graph hards. yoe 3 TC: 250 (prev at AWS, SDE2) —> 170 (current)
The answer is to be a stay at home
That is in the future once she finishes training, but for now I am funding both our lifestyles (including her tuition). I have 120k saved up by living at home in Texas, and she has 70k from family so her tuition will be covered, but I need to pay for rent/food/etc for now.
You want to her to finish all that expensive training and then stay at home. What is the point of training then?
Portland native here— it’s (or was, and will be again) an incredibly idyllic and beautiful city, with laid back people. Exceptional food, lots to do and relatively inexpensive versus SF. Speaking of, SF is an incredibly beautiful city with lots to do and delicious food (people are hit or miss, lots of dweebs). Believe it or not, what you see in the media doesn’t reflect everyday life in West Coast cities. I’m not sure where you reside now, but I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the quality of life out West
I went to Portland during 2020 and it was terrible, with windows boarded up and 🌈 festivals multiple times in a one week span. Is it better now?
If you complain about pride events, we don't want you here. Enjoy SF!
Portland is really, really good. SF too, but you might get better bang for buck in Portland while your wife is in med school.
Is the safety the same? Concerned about her safety
You only hear bad things about a place because negative news sells. There is no single city in the US about which bad headlines weren't written. No one can give any guarantees about safety at any place because all it takes is one psycho. Check crime stats and compare it with other cities. You might feel more comfortable about Portland then.
Portland has as bad (or maybe even worse) weather and sunshine as Seattle. With the microclimates in the bay, it’s not hard to find some sunshine somewhere in driving distance. This is important if either of you suffer from seasonal affect disorder.
At least Portland is cheaper
Move to the Portland burbs, Beaverton or Hillsboro
The burbs are perfect, you don’t see any of the issues that you’d notice in downtown. The Max drops you off in 20 min in downtown, and Hillsboro is the most diverse county in the pasty state. I’m paying 1100 a month for rent and I haven’t seen a single hobo or crackhead in months. There’s hospitals here which are probably hiring. Consider the west side suburbs it’s no wonder so many people are moving out of Portland to come here instead.
Also you avoid the bullshit city taxes of multnomah county
Why do you think these are the 2 worst cities in the country? Don’t buy into all the media bullshit. Yea SF has problems but it’s overblown in the media. A couple of neighborhoods are not representative of the whole city. Source: multiple independent groups of people (from Kansas, Ohio, etc) who I hosted over the last few months who were pleasantly surprised by how little homelessness they saw compared to what they had heard or anticipated.
🌈 ❌
Op I get you are against 🌈 but you are talking like you'll be living inside gay bars in the city😂. relax a bit. Living in the suburbs will be just fine
Portland is cheaper. SF has more tech job opportunities. This is all you really need to know, given that you’ve made up your mind that you’ll hate either place.
Also Portland is easier to get around in, less of a big city feel, but still amazing natural beauty and an awesome food scene. And it’s wildly cheaper than SF.
Portland weather sucks though
