SQL question in Bloomberg interview

Had my initial HackerRank with Bloomberg recently for a SWE role. I was asked a fairly complex SQL question (required use of CASE, THEN etc to solve when I looked it up post interview), followed by a pretty straightforward Java question. Problem was I was absolutely unprepared for the SQL problem since my experience with SQL is generally through a Java layer and I usually only write fairly straightforward queries. Is this normal? My recruiter didn’t mention any SQL being involved so I didn’t prepare for that at all

I would’ve but I had to screen share. I literally told the interviewer as I was doing it that I have no idea how to do this efficiently and would look this up in real life lool

No offense but CASE and THEN is pretty basic SQL

Goldman Sachs Mr_noBoT OP Nov 2, 2023

My team is literally spring boot based so I haven’t touched pure sql since college. It’s basic if you use it but the extent of my working logic is like joins, distinct, count, order, group etc

Relax. You will be judged fairly. Meaning can you figure it out eventually and/or have enough basic knowledge and did well on other question(s). I had no clue what to do on my SQL question when I interviewed a few years ago.

Is this only for senior hires? Because in my new grad interview I was only asked leetcode system design and behavioural

Bloomberg uhnno Nov 3, 2023

I have never seen new grads get asked SQL and have only asked seniors SQL questions when necessary.
