SRE is more reliable than SWE. Says so in the name.
Kinda a follow up question: does SRE usually has more on call than SWE? Or that just depends?
Depending on the company. In some companies, especially smaller companies, SRE = ops + dedicated oncall. In companies with large scale systems, SRE is a top tier role, SREs help other reguar naive code monkeys to keep their production promise. They design/build systems, tools and guidelines for others to build reliable systems. As others point out, read the google SRE book, you will know what are they doing. So I would ask what is the role about, if it is somewhat close to google, then it is much better than regular SWE. (ignore that Amazon idiot, as other Amazon engineers, he doesn't know shit)

Start SWE, master agile methodology, branch out quickly into automating integration of ops into your build pipe (infra as code, reliability, observability, etc). The best SRE come from SWE -- these worlds are converging
I think SRE should be paid at least as much as SWE. Very stressful work and quite frankly not everyone can do it for long.

What happens when most of your team is Indian?
SRE are the most valuable engineer and companies know this.
Aren’t people “valuing” more of SWE > SRE?
I will value SRE more, and I think some company paid SRE more.
