Planning to relocate from India to Europe. My company Amazon is willing to do an Inter-Company transfer but they are saying that labor cost is < 2x, so that will be my multiplying factor. I find it hard to believe because the general Cost of living is 300% more and housing is 8x more. Adding to the high tax rate, my savings would almost be the same/ even lesser than in India, even considering the 80x euro to INR conversion rate. Do you think I am being seriously low-balled here? I don't really need any visa sponsorship from Amazon, as I can work based on my spose visa. I do have relevant experience working in decent companies - Amazon now and ex-Microsoft in India. I should be able to find a decent job even if I quit Amazon and find something else there. Should I just consider resignation? Any suggestions? TC: Around 80K USD equivalent in INR (6yrs) #amazon #relocation #europe Edit: Location is Paris, France. Edit2: Someone asked this question in comments - but as far as my research goes, all western European cities except for London and Zurich ( Berlin/Munich/Paris/Amsterdam/Barcelona/Dublin) fall in the same bracket +/- 10k. You might get a premium of 20-30 percent for London/Zurich. Edit3: Also, I hear that employer has to pay a lot more than the offered CTC as employer tax to the country apart from individual tax. Is there any truth to it ?
These days Indian salary has reached such a high level at best companies that moving to Europe for more money/savings does not make sense.
I have been researching into these for a while now, and given how high salaries in India are right now, a move to Europe makes sense only when you are joining companies like Fb/Apple/Stripe in London, Google in Zurich, Databricks in Amsterdam. Since my plan is to eventually return back, I was just focusing that my net INR savings should increase, which was only happening at these companies. This value becomes even lower when you factor in the cost of living. No offence, but Amazon pay is really low across Europe. Eg at 4yoe, I see Fb london giving 120-130, amazon is mostly in range 90-100. Anyway, the move to Europe is more for having a different life, travelling around, exploring cultures than it is about money. All the best
Are you taking about TC or basic - 90k in TC will turn out to be 60k basic or 3k in hand. My hunch is that it is around 120-130k atleast even in France. Another thing to consider is the growth trajectory. It is common to get a 10% hike yoy in India - but it seems to near impossible in Europe - at this rate in another 6-7 years, the salaries will almost be equal.
Cost of labor != cost of living. Cost of living is high in any major city, right, but yet engineers still can be had for peanuts in europe so why should they pay you more. France and southern Europe are especially worst. You can find decent wages just in UK and CH, maybe a few NL companies
Lol these guys! You can make 1 Crore in india but stil can die from ther pothole. Not to forget about your wife/sister/mom comes back home at 10 because "it's not safe" out after that. Combine all this with relegious BS and govt not giving a fuck about general people. I like how these tech wannabe dudes don't want to think outside of money bubble. You can have the best Castle made from your money but at the end of the day, you have to move out of those high rise walls for daily work. Stop bull shutting about "high pay". This is where I live, my playground is bigger than your entire society 5 times combine but I'm still leaving.
I'll show you more of where I live, but the thing is, this is just a complex,at the end if the Day, I've to move out of it for work and face three daily problems that are yet to be resolved from last 50 years
There's a very very very high Chance that you don't live in a society like this but still, I'm leaving because if the reasons mentioned above.
It is a lowball financially but I wasn’t surprised at all. Welcome to Western Europe, Paris and France in general have very low salaries and higher taxes, this is across almost all companies especially tech, There will be yearly 0-2% base salary increase but working in Paris is closest to getting a government job in India, Very difficult to fire and a lot of holidays to chill and enjoy life, If you can get the same savings as in India- why not ? FYI- I can also tell you Europe and France especially has very less wow culture and you can’t wow with Amazon experience. It is a bit different than India. Also, tech is not cool here so rarely multiple job offers hopping with 30-60% hikes like in India. Here in Paris cool is banking, bureaucracy ( hype like IAS), luxury retail and ranking of your French college ( possibly more hype than IIT/ IIM in India). So without knowing the language and having Amazon and Microsoft experience and with no job in France won’t just open doors that easily as it would almost literally in any place on earth, So resigning without a job and finding a job here in Paris may ask you to think twice, Also, this is strictly experience about Paris and not other European cities like Amsterdam or Berlin or Dublin,
Where in Europe ? That decides salary level The prudent option would be to take the transfer and then switch, given you are so confident. Re visa - while good you have the option to work as a dependent, companies usually do not prefer that since you could lose the right to work for no fault of theirs/yours. Always better to have your own work rights And finally, you dont come to europe to earn big bucks or save crazily. You come here to enjoy the quality of life (and pay much higher taxes).
Updated location. Thanks.
In Europe, employer pays unemployment insurance on top of other employee related contributions. So yes, employer costs are higher than what you see on paper. In terms of expenses, I would classify Paris and London in the same bracket. Amsterdam and Berlin are cheaper than Paris. Surprised Amazon doesn’t think so. Barcelona is way cheaper and so are salaries.
